John "Rex" Elmore Harrison

March 23, 1959 – January 29, 2015

John Elmore Harrison (also known as Rex by his airline colleagues) departed this life on Thursday, January 29, 2015 at 8:32pm. He was the third child of the late Charles Harrison Jr. and Jeanne Audrey Harrison. John was born on Monday, March 23, 1959 in Chicago, IL.

John attended parochial Lutheran School from K-12th grade. Upon graduation, he attended Ball State University in Muncie, IN with a Bachelor’s degree in Business. He was a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

After graduation, he enlisted in the US Navy as an officer. During this time, he was stationed in Sicily, Italy, and his job duties included flying dignitaries around Europe. He also flew jet fighter aircraft carriers off the ships. He retired from the military after eleven years of active duty service.

He then gained employment with Southwest Airlines and has been employed with them for 21 years. He was an Airline Captain upon his death.

He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Avis Harrison; two daughters, Tiera and Raegan Harrison; one son, Ted Jonathon (TJ) Harrison; and granddaughter, Malayah Harrison. Also included: his sister, Mary Ann Harrison; sister-in-law, Nute Myers; sister-in-law, Dionne Bolling; nephews, Cardale and Charles Harrison; niece, Lynnie Harrison; and a host of other nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Charles Harrison Jr., and sister Edith Harrison.
