William “Lynn” Newgent went to be with His Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Monday, April 5th, 2021, at the age of 78. He died at the William R. Courtney Veterans Home in Temple, TX. Lynn was born September 17, 1942 in Tulsa, Oklahoma to William Tolbeart Newgent and Jackie Newgent. The family then moved to Odessa, TX where he grew up and graduated from Odessa High School. He also attended Odessa College. Lynn then joined the United States Air Force where he was stationed at Dyess Air Force Base in Abilene, TX for four years during the Vietnam War. After his military service, he became a welder and worked on the Alaskan Pipeline at Prudhoe Bay, Alaska. Lynn then returned to Odessa and was a welder for Big Tex Trailers. Lynn would have continued working on the Alaskan Pipeline, but, was such a HUGE Permian Panther football fan, he moved back to Odessa so he could have season tickets to their football games. He took his mom, Jackie, to many of the games with him. The fans sitting around him knew him as “MOJO”. This nickname stuck and he got the license plates “1MOJO1” for his car. Lynn was even mentioned in the book, “Friday Night Lights”, which was about the Permian High School Panthers football team. Lynn had a great sense of humor and kept everyone laughing. He was a very giving person and shared what little he had with family and friends. He loved dogs and had several over the years that he named Tex, Buddy, Rexanne, Peanut, and Little Dog. Lynn also loved to play cribbage and pool. He was an excellent pool player and won many trophies.
Lynn was baptized by his nephew, Larry Hagler, at the Wednesday night church service on December 23rd, 1992 at the Golf Course Road Church of Christ in Midland. Lynn’s brother-in-law, Leo Hagler, was also baptized the same night by Larry, Leo’s son. Lynn was injured at Big Tex and ended up on disability. He then was a resident of Terrace West Nursing Home in Midland. Then, William R. Courtney State Veterans Home in Temple, where he died. Though disabled, Lynn kept his great sense of humor. Lynn was preceded in death by his parents, Tolbeart and Jackie Newgent, his nephew, Larry Hagler and his brother-in-law, Leo Hagler, both of Midland, and his cousins Tim and Gayle Corntassel. Lynn is survived by his two sisters, Bobbie Hagler and Lela Jo McElroy, both of Temple, TX. He is also survived by his nieces, Linda Hagler and Sherry Sewell of Temple, his niece Cindy Davis of Cedar Park, and his nephew and wife, Larry and Michelle McElroy of Carrollton. Lynn is also survived by favorite cousin and best friend, Pamela Corntassel, and cousins Tommy and Terry Corntassel, Jimmy Paul and Tammy Corntassel, Gary Newgent and David Lee Newgent. The memorial service will be Tuesday, April 20th, at the Crawford-Bowers Funeral Home in Temple, TX at 12 noon. Burial will follow at the Veterans State Cemetery in Killeen, TX. Veterans will be pallbearers. The memorial service will be conducted by Lynn’s nephew, Larry McElroy.
