

Dr. Herbert L. Wehrmeister, 90, of Terre Haute, passed away on Wednesday, October 26, 2011 at Davis Gardens. He was born on November 8, 1920 in Chicago, IL to Arthur and Elizabeth (Oldenberg) Wehrmeister. He married Agnes Stark on July 25, 1953 at Immanuel Lutheran Church where he remained a member since moving to Terre Haute. He graduated first in his class at ITT in Chicago and went on to earn his Doctorate in Organic Chemistry from Northwestern University. Herbert worked as an organic chemist for Commercial Solvents and had several patents under his name. He enjoyed playing chess and once held the title of City Chess Champion. He also enjoyed playing tennis, table tennis, and solving the Sunday crossword puzzles. Herbert was also an avid reader and especially enjoyed biographies and mysteries. He was a member of the chess club, a table tennis group, and several bowling leagues. He enjoyed music and played the saxophone and piano. Herbert and Agnes also enjoyed going to the symphony and the Terre Haute Community Theater.
Herbert is survived by his wife of 58 years, Agnes; their children, Roy Wehrmeister and his wife Kathy of Skokie, IL, Ann Wehrmeister of Terre Haute, and Robert Wehrmeister and his wife Andrea of Austin, TX; grandchildren, Kevin Wehrmeister and Lisa Wehrmeister, both of Skokie, and Eric Wehrmeister and Michael Wehrmeister both of Austin; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Allen Wehrmeister.
Visitation will be on Sunday, October 30 from 4 to 8 p.m. at Roselawn Funeral Home. Services will be held on Monday, October 31 at 10 a.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 645 Poplar Street, Terre Haute with Pastor Sutton officiating. Burial will follow in Roselawn Memorial Park.
