Obituary of James Lowell Swift
James was born February 6, 1933 in Pocahontas, Illinois to Gwendolyn Garrett Swift and Charles Virgil Swift. Jim passed away peacefully at his home on August 15, 2022. He leaves behind: WIFE: Donna Moss Swift, who he married in September of 1988. CHILDREN: Jerry L. Swift, Michigan James M. Swift, Terre Haute, IN John C. Swift, Terre Haute, IN (Wife, Nancy) Lisa L. Swift, Terre Haute, IN (Jim helped raise and loved Connie Johnson and Barbara Harris as his own daughters) STEPCHILDREN: Jennifer Kerrigan, Florida, (Husband, Payton) Shelby Radenheimer, Aurora, IN (Husband, David) GRANDCHILDREN: James R. Swift, St. Louis, MO Rachel A. Doa, Detroit, MI (Husband, Mike) Laura Dunbar, Bloomington, IN (Husband, Marcus) Caleb Swift (Renee) Sabastian Swift Mackenzie Swift, Brown County, IN (Cody) Madison Swift, Indianapolis, IN (Derrick) William Swift, Clinton, IN Matthew Swift, Clinton, IN Abby Hatcher, Nashville, TN Lee Hatcher, New York Macey Radenheimer, Indianapolis Casey Radenheimer, Dayton, IN Paige Helton (Cyle), Terre Haute, IN Mitchell Reyes, Florida Jordan Reyes, Florida GREAT GRANDCHILDREN: Josie Analise; Elle Marie; Emerson James; Aliyah; Colton; Clayton; and Karter. Jim was predeceased by his first wife and mother of his children, Doris Swift, his stepdaughter Karla Hatcher, and step grandson John Wynn. Jim had numerous brothers who have all predeceased him. Jim served in the US Navy from 1950 through 1954 during the Korean War as a UDT Diver. After being honorably discharged from the Navy he served with the Terre Haute Police Department from 1959 through 1979, including eight years as Chief of Police under Mayor William Brighton’s administration. Jim served as a lobbyist in the Indiana General Assembly for the Fraternal Order of Police and was instrumental in instituting the state merit laws to govern Police Departments in Indiana, and he also was instrumental in the passing of the 1977 Pension Reform Act for all Policemen and Firemen in the State of Indiana. After retiring once again he took a position as a security supervisor with Public Service of Indiana at the Marble Hill Nuclear Generating Station in New Washington, Indiana. Thereafter he returned to Terre Haute and accepted a position at First Bank & Trust Company, retiring as a vice president. Jim’s family wishes to acknowledge and thank those who helped tirelessly to make Jim’s last months and days comfortable. Heart-to-Heart, Paige and Cyle, we couldn’t have done it without you. In lieu of flowers Jim’s family asks that you contribute to a charity of your choice. A Celebration of Jim’s Life will be held at Roselawn Funeral Home from 11 AM to 1 PM on Saturday, September 3rd, 2022. Dan Walls, Terre Haute City Police Chaplain and US Missionary Chaplain will provide services and comfort to family and friends at 1PM. Funeral services will concluded at the Funeral Home.
