Obituary of Joanne Elizabeth Thomas
Joanne Elizabeth Thomas, 84, of Terre Haute, passed away on September 19, 2011 at Union Hospital. She was born on September 18, 1924 in Brazil to Marley Olan and Erma Elmona (Schaffer) Miller. She married the love of her life, Gilbert Owen Thomas in 1950 and he survives. Joanne worked at Clay-Ladd Insurance as an insurance adjuster and worked as a secretary for Judge Paul Messick. She later devoted her full time to raising her two children and making a loving home for her family. Joanne and Gilbert enjoyed square dancing, travelling, and their yearly trips to Panama City Beach, Florida together. Joanne was well known for her artistic and beautiful needlepoint work. She took great pleasure in cooking for her family and friends; her Chop Suey was a favorite. Joanne was an active member of Memorial United Methodist Church in Terre Haute and volunteered at the church’s kitchen, meals on wheels and various other lady’s circles. She led a Bible Study Fellowship at First Baptist church and was a member of PEO. Joanne is survived by her husband of 61 years, Gilbert; their children Flint Owen Thomas and his wife Jackie of Granger, IN and Beth Schacht and her husband Dave of Elmhurst, IL; grandchildren Aaron Gilbert Thomas and his wife Teresa, Andrea Elizabeth Thomas, Sean Owen Thomas, Matthew Rainier Schacht, Miles Remington Schacht, and Mason Rhys Schacht; a twin brother, Jeff Miller of Terre Haute, a brother Gary Lee Miller and his wife Jane of Logansport, nephews, Brad, Mark, Kent, Eric, Scott, and Brett; and nieces, Christy, Teresa, Holly, Susan, and Diane. Joanne was preceded in death by her parents and her twin brothers, Von Glen and Verl Gene Miller. Visitation will be on Friday, September 23 from noon until 2 p.m. at Roselawn Funeral Home. A funeral ceremony will be held on Friday, September 23 at 2 p.m. at the funeral home with Reverend Scott Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in Roselawn Memorial Park.
