

Reta Mae Newman, daughter of Robert M. and Hallie Lucas McConchie was born January 25, 1922 in Terre Haute. She graduated from Garfield High School in 1940 and Indiana State in 1943 with a B.S. degree and in 1962 with a M.S. degree. Reta was a member of the Kappa Kappa Social Sorority.
She married Roy E. “Mike” Newman, January 28, 1944 who preceded her in death on March 21, 1990.
Reta is survived by a son, Robert Michael Newman and wife, Antoinette “Tonie” of Clinton; a grandson, Travis Newman and wife, Jami, also of Clinton and their children Halle Rae Newman, Heath Robert Newman, and Hadyn Reece Newman; two granddaughters, Jamie Newman of Seattle, Washington and Alexis Newman and Harold Knutsen of Snohomish, Washington.
She taught Vocational Home Economics at Shelburn High School in Shelburn, IN 1943-1948; Pimento High School in Pimento, IN 1951-1960; McLean Junior High School from 1960 until it was closed and finished her teaching career at Chauncey Rose Junior High School, retiring in 1981. She had been a former member of Vigo County Fair Board and for several years a 4-H leader in both Vigo and Sullivan Counties.
Reta was a member of Terre Haute First Baptist Church and Kum Dubble Sunday School Class. Her other memberships include a fifty year member of Terre Haute #43, Order of Eastern Star, a fifty year member of Daughters of the Nile, an active member of the Honored Ladies (widows of Shriners), former member of Fort Harrison Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution, Wabash Valley Chapter Daughters of the American Colonists, and Nathaniel Foote Chapter, Colonial Dames XVII Century.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children, Light House Mission, Inc., or the donor’s charity of choice.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, December 27th from 11:00 A.M. until the funeral service at 1:00 P.M at Roselawn Funeral Home with Pastor Bernie Jackson officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park.
