Born in Chicago, Illinois, August 2, 1946. At the age of 6 her family moved to Jackson, MS. She grew up with one sister in a small house on Heather Lane. She graduated from Murrah High School in 1964.
In 1969 fate triggered a series of events bringing her to Texarkana to meet the love of her life. While working as night auditor for the Sands Hotel, a handsome stranger walked into the café and asked for a cup of coffee. From that moment forward they were inseparable. On March 20, 1970, she married Jerry Askins and began a life shared over 50 years full of love, happiness, laughter, fun and travel.
She always had a great love for children. As Kindergarten Director of Calvary Baptist Church she taught countless children to count, color, read, write and use their manners. When she became a mother in 1974 to her only daughter, her life forever was filled with joy, excitement, laugher and surprise. She was known as GiGi to her grandchildren and anyone else who felt close to her.
After the Kindergarten closed, she joined her husband at the helm of his business, and together created Askins Polaris. Their hard work and effort paid off and afforded the opportunity to retire into a lifestyle of travel and leisure. During their journeys they formed life long friendships and unbreakable bonds with people across the country.
She was a member of the American Coach Association, South Central Chapter, Crusin’ Cajuns, the Texarkana Humane Society and the Red Cross. She was a strong advocate for VA Dogs of Texas, a charity very dear to her heart. She was also a charter member of the PWT Cruisers.
She was active in all aspects of life. She loved to dance. She never missed an opportunity to take a waltz around the dance floor. Her compassion and willingness to help others was apparent to everyone who knew her. Her zest for life was an inspiration to anyone who met her. She was kind, creative, driven and resourceful. She could improvise or improve any situation. She will be loved and missed by all for many years to come.
