Mr. Daniel James McGrath

Daniel James McGrath (Dan), 81, of The Woodlands, Texas, died 3/22/2023 at the Devotion Crisis Hospice Home, Conroe, Texas, after complications from open heart surgery. Dan was born October 22, 1941 in Detroit, Michigan, to John (Jack) McGrath and Mathilda (Tillie) (Fischer) McGrath.

He graduated from Berkley High School in Berkley, Michigan, of which he had fond memories and maintained close friends. Dan worked in and loved the food distribution industry for most of his life. He started as a young man working for his uncle selling ice cream at local county fairs in Michigan. He then worked for A&P grocery stores. Eventually became a District sales manager for such brands as Beatrice Foods and Swiss Miss. Dan had remained friends with many of his fellow workers over the years. He retired from his own wholesale food distribution business, Epic Foods, in 2008.

Dan was one of the first families to settle in The Woodlands, Texas, in the early 70’s. He started the first Scouting Troop, 772, and served with the Aging in Place Volunteer Group in The Woodlands. Dan was also elected to the Flushing Township Board of Trustees in Michigan in 2016 while living there after retirement. Dan loved nature and had a gift of gab. He’d never heard a story he didn’t want to share.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters Marlene and Carolyn.

He is survived by his loving wife Eileen, his brothers Tom (Carol) McGrath and Gary (Karen) McGrath; his 3 sons John (Jennifer) McGrath; David (Sharene) McGrath and Daniel M. (Julie) McGrath; grandchildren Jane, Harrison, Blaise and Jett McGrath; his nephew and nieces and their families. Also dear to him was his brother-in-law Dennis (Virginia) Hill, their children, and their families. His Berrypick Lane neighbors had become a second family to him during his last 6 years in The Woodlands, Texas.

Cremation has taken place and a Memorial Service is planned for April 20, 2023, at 2:00 pm. The service will be at Forest Park The Woodlands Funeral Home. 18000 I-45 South, The Woodlands, Texas 77384. There will be a reception immediately following at the same location.

Donations may be sent to the Flushing Area Senior Center in Flushing, Michigan where Dan and Eileen met while serving together on the Board of Directors. Make checks payable to the Flushing Senior Center. With "In memory of Dan McGrath" on the memo line and mailed to Flushing Senior Center, 106 Elm Street, Flushing, MI 48433. Donations may also be made to the family and they will make sure the donation gets to the Flushing Senior Center.
