She was preceded in death by her husband, Stephen Melton; her sister Jean Bradshaw; her parents, Gloria and Hayden Watson; and her beloved dachshund Reba.
Laura was born in Houston, TX on August 24th, 1952. She graduated from Waltrip High School where she received her diploma. She was married to Stephen Melton on May 17th, 1972. She was the owner of Shamrock Oil Company before continuing her career as an accountant at Equinor.
Laura will be remembered as a caring, strong, and kind woman whose greatest joys were her family and animals. She deeply loved her children and grandchildren, where she found happiness in spoiling them and creating special memories together. She carried a deep spirituality throughout her life and especially loved celebrating Christmas and Easter.
She found joy in the simple things like painting and feeding the birds that visited her garden. She had a special talent for baking. She was known for her pecan pie and pineapple cheesecake, which will be fondly remembered by those who were lucky enough to enjoy them.
Her love for animals was a defining part of who she was. Over her life, she cared for many animals, treating them as her family and showering them with love and attention. This compassion was reflected in her everyday life, including rescuing stray cats, taking them in and giving them the love and care they so desperately needed.
She was incredibly hardworking and took pride in her business and career, dedicating many years to her work.
Laura will be remembered through her kindness and strength, her compassion, the willingness to accept anyone as family, and her love for her children and grandchildren. Those that knew her will carry this with them.
A celebration of life will be held at Forest Park – The Woodlands on May 9th, 2026 at 2:00pm. For those who plan to attend, we invite you to forgo traditional black attire and instead wear something colorful in honor of Laura. She loved dressing boldly and beautifully, and we hope to celebrate her memory by embracing the vibrant style she was so well known for.
In honor of her love for animals, please consider bringing a donation of pet supplies (toys, food, and other essentials) to the memorial, or making a donation to the Houston Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA). The family will ensure all donated items are delivered to the Houston SPCA. You may also use this link to connect with the Houston SPCA wish list: https://houstonspca.org/ways-to-give/wish-list/
