Sonya Jean Martin, of Conroe, Texas, passed away peacefully on May 14, 2026 at the age of 83, with her daughter and son by her side. She was a loving mom, granny and great granny. Sonya was born in Beeville, TX on January 3, 1943. Her father was a member of the Air Force and she experienced living around the world, starting school in Japan. She graduated from Del Valle High School in Austin and attended Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos.
Sonya married Donie “Don” Martin on June 6, 1981. The couple lived in Conroe where they owned and operated a successful professional landscaping company for over 20 years before retiring. Sonya also worked for the East Plantation Utility District for many years. She and Don enjoyed traveling, especially on cruises, and relaxing at their second home on Lake Livingston, spending time there with family and friends, fishing and barbecuing. Later in life, they enjoyed vacationing in their RV, often taking family along.
Sonya enjoyed reading, hummingbirds, going to casinos, and playing cards and dominoes with friends and family. But everyone who knows her knows about her obsession with Dr Pepper as well as her addiction to bingo. Her grandchildren couldn’t wait to turn 7 so they could go to the bingo hall with Granny. Sonya had a special place in her heart for dogs, especially English Bulldogs. Once, when her dog was bred, she cried each time a puppy was sold and ended up keeping three of the pups.
Sonya was blessed with a large, loving extended family. She is preceded in death by her parents, Raoul W. and Julia M. Pouliot, her husband, Donie Martin, and her best friend, Jeannie Jones. She is survived by her children, Shantel Arrowood and husband, Dan, of Huntsville and Brent Lowe and wife Tara, of LaGrange; grandchildren Tara Lyn Humphrey of Temple, Melyn Turner and husband, Jonathan, of Frisco; Maxwell Arrowood and wife, Madison, of Conroe; Jessica Faye and wife, Sunny, of Giddings; and Riley Lowe of LaGrange; great grandchildren Leilani and Laya Turner; and bonus family Tami Cloud and husband, Jim of Galveston, Noah Martin, Stephanie, Ethan and Kaylie, of Pearland. She also cherished lifelong friendships with Joann Moseley, Carolyn Gibson and Franceile Gunter, who were more like sisters.
The family would like to express their great appreciation for the staff at Strake Court Assisted Living where Sonya lived for the last four years. Their love and care enriched and extended her life and we are forever grateful. Special thanks also to the compassionate staff at Hospice 365 for the exceptional care and comfort they provided Sonya and family.
A Committal Service will be held at Forest Park The Woodlands Funeral Home & Cemetery, Grand Hall, 18000 Interstate 45 South, The Woodlands, TX 77384, US, on May 21, 2026, from 11:00 am to 11:30 am.
The family invites everyone who attends to join them for a memorial lunch at Margarita’s Mexican Restaurant on N Loop 336 in Conroe to honor her love of “bean soup”.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the English Bulldog Rescue Network of Houston in her name.
