Born on December 7, 1941, at St. Joseph’s Infirmary in Houston, Texas, he moved to Conroe, Texas, in 1942, where he grew up, attended school, and graduated from Conroe High School in 1961. An active member of the school band, he played the trombone and formed friendships and memories that would last a lifetime.
He continued his education at Arkansas College and Wharton County Junior College, where he met the love of his life, Wilma Parks. The two fell deeply in love and were married on December 5, 1964, in Sweeny, Texas. They recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary, a testament to a lifelong partnership built on love, devotion, and joy. Their bond was one of true soulmates, sharing countless memories and adventures, including 22 cruises taken together.
From 1966 to 1971, Jack proudly served his country as a member of the Army National Guard. During his service, he began as a truck driver before going Airborne, earning his jump wings despite a lifelong fear of heights. The fact that he willingly jumped out of perfectly good airplanes was a source of irony and laughter for those who knew him. He often joked that he always made sure someone was behind him to push him out the door.
Together, he and Wilma built a family filled with love and laughter, raising two sons, Victor Howard and Christopher Howard. He adored his granddaughters, Mikayla Howard and Samantha Howard, taking great joy in watching them grow and guiding them along the way. One of his favorite pastimes was taking his granddaughters fishing, always more than happy to bait their hooks and share his love of the outdoors.
He was deeply dedicated to his family and community, spending many years as Assistant Scoutmaster for Troop 143 in the 1970s and 1980s. He loved camping, fishing, and being outside, sharing these passions with his family during countless weekends and vacations spent exploring the beauty of nature.
Jack had a remarkable ability to strike up conversations with anyone. His humble and genuine nature made him a joy to be around, and he never met a stranger he couldn’t talk to. His warmth, kindness, and gentle spirit touched the lives of everyone he met.
As a man of deep faith, he knew and loved Jesus, living his life with humility and compassion. His love and dedication to Wilma and his children were evident to all who knew him. His gentle strength, sense of humor, and unwavering love for his family will be dearly missed but never forgotten.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Wilma Parks Howard; his two sons, Victor Jack Howard, Jr. (wife Brandi G. Howard) and Christopher Warren Howard; his granddaughters, Mikayla R. Howard and Samantha G. Howard; his brother, Jim Howard (and wife Francine); and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Jimmie Haven Howard, and his mother, Penny Westmoreland Howard.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on Thursday, March 20 at 10:00 am at Crossroads Baptist Church, 5000 College Park Dr, The Woodlands, TX 77384.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Project Zero, helping veterans through outdoor therapy (https://projzero.com/) or Crossroads Baptist Church (https://crossroadstw.org/).
