

A resident of this area all of his life, Gary was born on June 16, 1952 in Davidson County to the late William Franklin and Elizabeth Tussey Whitman. Gary had worked as a furniture upholsterer before going back to school to earn his Associate’s Degree from Davidson County Community College. Over the last twenty years, Gary worked as a dedicated switch technician for Verizon Wireless.
Gary was very patriotic, having served his country in the United States Army in Korea. He especially enjoyed supporting veterans and the Wounded Warrior Project. He loved to collect guitars, spend time with his friends and family, camping, and golf. Gary was also a member of First Presbyterian Church in Thomasville.
Surviving are his wife, Donna Engelhardt Whitman of the home; daughter, Sarah Finison and her husband Jeremy of Pine Hall, NC; sons, Gary Don Whitman II and his wife Misti Boles Whitman of Thomasville, and Seth Orion Dunn of Winston-Salem; and three grandchildren, Emma Whitman, Aiden Finison, and Lily Finison. Also surviving are one sister, Karen Beck and her husband Ricky; and brothers, Terry Whitman and his wife Nancy, Tony Whitman and his wife Karen, and Frank “Junior” Whitman.
Funeral services will be held at 2 pm Friday at First Presbyterian Church, 21 Randolph Street, Thomasville, with Pastor Michael Lamm officiating. Burial with Military Honors by the Randolph County Honor Guard will follow in Holly Hill Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
