

A resident of this area all of his life, Dean was born on February 15, 1955 in Davidson County to the late John and Dorothy Myers Doby. Dean was a graduate of the Trinity High School class of 1974, where he played football with his father as coach. He especially enjoyed Carolina Panther’s Football, hunting, and spending time with his family, making sure they were always taken care of. For over 20 years, Dean was a faithful public servant in the community, having worked for Davidson County EMS and later retiring from the Thomasville Fire Department. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his step-grandmother, Nannie Cox.
Surviving are his wife of over 33 years, Tammy Hicks Doby of the home; daughters, Whitney Swaim and her husband Brett of High Point and Hanna Garrett and her husband Andrew of Thomasville; the light of his life, his grandson Ryder Swaim; step-mother, Carol Doby of Thomasville; sister, Myra Dawn Doby of Thomasville; brothers, Michael Doby and his wife Dawn of Lexington; Gary Doby of Thomasville; and Luke Doby of Thomasville; special nephew and hunting buddy, Ikey Hicks; and numerous nieces.
A celebration of Dean’s life will be held at 2 pm Saturday, January 30 at Carolina Memorial Baptist Church, 422 Liberty Drive, Thomasville, with Pastor Bynum Orr and Pastor Jimmy Garrett officiating. Interment with fireman’s rites will follow in Holly Hill Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 until 9 pm Friday, January 29th at Thomasville Funeral Home, 18 Randolph Street.
The family would like to extend a special thanks for the loving support that the City of Thomasville and the Thomasville Fire Department showed for Dean over his many years of service. The family would also like to thank the staff of Dr. George Sanders for all of their care provided to Dean and his family.
