Alan Hon-Fai Tsui (徐漢輝) was born in Hong Kong on February 17, 1958 to Mr. Sai Tsui (徐世) and Mrs. Kwong-Ying Loo (盧鄺英). He was the eighth child in a large family of 12 children. Alan's brilliance was apparent even as a high-school student at Wah Yan College. He won a hard-earned place to study Civil Engineering at the University of Hong Kong. At the university, just as in high school, he did not limit himself to scholarly pursuits. In his third year, he was the Head of Orientation for the Engineering Society. After obtaining his Bachelor's degree, he followed it up with a Master's degree of Business Administration at the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
After graduation, Alan embarked on a varied and rewarding career. As an engineering student, he had already seized an opportunity to work abroad in Singapore as part of an Exchange Program by McDermott South East Asia PTE Ltd. Fresh out of school, he first worked for Watson-Hawksley as an Engineer. Incidentally that was where he met his future wife, Ellen Yuen-Wah Cheung (張婉華). Next came a stint at Shenciti Investments as a Project Planner. He then worked as a Contract Manager at Hagemeyer-Morison (Hong Kong) and later at John D. Hutchinson Industrial. He was also Comptroller at C.G.Tech.
In 1988, Alan immigrated to Canada. He settled down in the eastern suburbs of Toronto and became a citizen. There he completed his Certified Management Accountant (CMA) certification in 1991. Since then he worked in different capacities at numerous companies. He was Controller at GTE Sylvania, Rexam Containers, and Metalforming Technologies Inc. (MTI). While at MTI, he was promoted to Director of Finance, a position he also held at Intercontinental Warehouses Inc. The next time he was promoted, he became Vice President of Finance at GSW Building Products. The position he last held was Manager of Finance at The International Group Inc. (IGI).
Alan was a family man. His family life started as a duet in 1987 when he married Ellen. This became a trio with the birth of daughter Natalie Karen Tsui in 1991. The quartet was complete in 1993 when daughter Tiffany Ellen Tsui was born. A devoted husband and a doting father, Alan saw as his primary duties to provide for and to stand guard over his family. In these, he never failed, all the way to the end of his life.
At home, Alan enjoyed working on projects. Whether it was testing a new recipe, or planning to travel abroad, or volunteering as a scout leader at the 6th Richmond Hill Group, his friends and family never ceased to be amazed by the leadership, creativity and resourcefulness he would bring to his endeavors.
Alan passed away on August 16, 2014. He spent most of his last days in the care of his loving family—Ellen, Natalie and Tiffany—who will hold his memory in their hearts forever.
