Alan ("Al") Keyworth passed away peacefully at St. Michael's Hospital on May 24, 2012 surrounded by his wife and family. He is survived by Donna, his loving wife and friend for almost 59 years and by his children; Cheryl (Gord) Stensrud, Linda Keyworth and Scott (Nancy) Keyworth; his grandchildren, Taylor, Carson, Maggie, Grace, Laura and Christopher; his sister Gail (Barry) Hicklenton, sister-in-law Linda (Dalt) VanCleave, and brother-in-law Murray (Lorna) Tufts and their families.
Al was born in Vancouver, BC on July 15, 1929 and moved to Victoria in 1940 where he lived and went to school. His career began on stage with The Gilbert and Sullivan Society, Starlight Theatre and Theatre Under The Stars. He then moved on to CJVI radio station as a news announcer and eventually took his talents to radio station CKWX in Vancouver in 1952 where he worked on air and in advertising sales. Al began a "serious" career as a furnace oil salesman at Home Oil Distributors Ltd., where he worked until 1963. From Home Oil he left to begin his lengthy and successful association with The Molson Companies Limited which he first joined as a Sales Manager in BC.
Al's career at Molson took he and his family east through Calgary, Toronto and Montreal, where he took on increasingly senior roles with Molson including: President, Molson's Western Breweries (1969 - 1974); EVP Operations, Beaver Lumber Limited (1974); SVP Retail Merchandising Group, President Beaver Lumber (1975 - 1980) and EVP Retail Distribution Group, The Molson Companies Limited (1980 - 1984), where he acted as Chairman of Beaver Lumber Limited, Wilson Office Specialty Ltd., and Seaway/Midwest Ltd. Al's career culminated in 1984 when he took on the role as EVP Brewing Group, President, Molson Breweries of Canada Limited where among other accomplishments he brought the Molson Indy and Coors brands to Canada.
Outside of work, Al had many passions; sports, music, technology and travel. He loved and played golf for many years (always wishing he was a better player!). He was a proud member of the Bayview Golf and Country Club for 33 years and served as its President in 1986. He loved his time spent with his R & R buddies. Al was also an active member of the Country Club of Coral Springs in Florida for 23 years and enjoyed every minute with his American friends.
Music was a vital component of his life. He felt any kind of music was both soothing and enriched the soul.
Technology fascinated him. He reluctantly gave up his Father's antique Underwood typewriter and replaced it with a "State Of The Art" (for 1986!) Texas Instrument computer. They evolved together to his present day status as an iPad 2 owner.
Al and Donna were fortunate enough to share a long and happy retirement where they spent 26 years visiting the four corners of the globe. In January 2012, Al fulfilled a lifelong goal of travelling to his seventh continent when he visited the Antarctic.
Al applied his razor sharp wit and purpose of mind to everything he pursued from his enthusiasm for sports to his enjoyment of a really good (bad) joke or pun. Al's legacy will be the sharing of his many interests, opinions and compassion with his family and friends and because of this many lives have been enriched. Al lived his life to the fullest and will be sadly missed.
Our thanks to the Doctors, Nurses and staff of the Cardio Vascular Surgery unit at St. Michael's Hospital. At Al's request there will be no formal service. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Bayview Golf & Country Club, 25 Fairway Heights Drive, Thornhill, Ont., on Sunday June 24, 2012 from 3:00PM to 5:00PM (Casual attire).
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to SickKids Foundation in memory of Alan Keyworth at www.sickkidsfoundation.com
