Dr. Anne Summers was a devoted physician and a recognized leader in genetics. Her commitment to excellence established her as a well respected Geneticist and one of the initial pathfinders in development of Triple Screening Testing for pregnant women. Dr. Summers was the Chief of Genetics at North York General and Acting Chief at Lake Ridge Hospital. Since her early days in the University of Toronto medical program, Dr. Summers demonstrated a passion for research and became active in the Huntington Society, Melanoma and North Bay Clinics as well as the MSS Laboratories. Dr. Summers was a frequent speaker and advocate of the advancement of genetics research and authored numerous medical papers to advance the field. Her enthusiasm and dedication was an inspiration to her colleagues, family and friends.
Anne loved reading, gardening, classical music, a lively debate and a glass of Zin. She loved her two kids, John Michael and Kate, and spent numerous summers with them generating a love of gardening and books, her two greatest passions. She was persuasive and shared a love of classical music with her husband Peter. This past year, Dr. Summers developed a sudden neurological disorder that made her quite weak. Even in those moments, Dr. Summers demostrated the indomitable spirit that made her a leader in her field. A recent bout with pneumonia resulted in her death.
Dr. Summers died quietly in her home surrounded by the things she loved best - her husband Peter, her children John Michael and Kate, her books and the flowers that she nurtured during her life.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, March 16, 2009 at All Saints Greek Orthodox Church(222 Burbank Drive). Interment to follow at York Cemetery. As an expression of sympathy, donations may be made to the Huntington Society.
