OBITUARY

Charles Gerard MacDonald

17 June, 1944 – 9 November, 2025
IN THE CARE OF

Kane-Jerrett Funeral Homes

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Charles Gerard MacDonald - otherwise known to close friends as Gerry, GMAC, and Charlie and fondly within the family as Jed. He passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 9, 2025 at MacKenzie Health Centre with family by his side.

Jed was predeceased by his beloved wife Elizabeth (Munro) in 2019, as well as cherished sister Joan and three treasured brothers Ed, Ron and Roddy. He is survived by sisters Mary, Lorraine (Bob), Margie (Gary), Diane (Dan Hugh), Dale (Glen), Debbie (Dave); Brothers Gary (Sheila), Gordie (Julie), David, brother-in-law Neil MacKenzie, sister-in-law Mary Lou MacDonald and daughters Denise and Amanda. Jed leaves a considerably large lineage of beloved nieces and nephews.

Jed was the son of the late Allen and Gertie (O’Quinn) MacDonald. He was born in Tompkins, Newfoundland and was the sixth oldest of 14 siblings – seven girls and seven boys. Prior to becoming Canada’s tenth province, his mother and five siblings emigrated to New Waterford to reunite with their father who came to Canada in 1943 to work as a coalminer.

Although Jed lived in Ontario for 60 years, he was raised in New Waterford, Nova Scotia. Looking for opportunities, Jed moved to Ontario at the age of 21, searching for a job that wasn’t underground in the coalmines. After working many small jobs, he was elated to get a job with Continental Can, which later became Crown Cork & Seal. He retired after 40 great years then proceeded to enjoy the retirement phase of his life.

Jed was a lifelong avid Yankees fan. He played baseball in his early years and it was his sport of choice……he just loved baseball. He was also a well-liked patron at King Henry Pub, where he spent many hours talking with friends about sports and life in general.

Following his wishes, he will be cremated and a formal internment will take place in New Waterford, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia.

The family would like to thank the nursing staff of MacKenzie Health. They ensured his needs were compassionately met. Condolences can be sent online to the family via Kane-Jerrett Dignity Funeral Homes, Thornhill. Anyone wishing to honour Jed can make a donation to Mackenzie Health Foundation or the charity of your choice.
