OBITUARY

Clement Leung Key Lee

18 March, 193629 April, 2021

Clement Leung Key Lee, known to friends as “Clem”, passed away peacefully on April 29, 2021 at the age of 85 years.

Clem is survived by his wife of 54 years, Lydia (nee Cheung); daughters Pamela (Greg), Sabrina (Nick) and Fiona (Andrew); grandchildren Leigh, Lauren, Sean, Alex, Anthony and Wesley; brothers Carro (Fidelia) and Rocky (Amy) and numerous nieces and nephews and their children. Clem was preceded in death by his parents and brother Eric (Mimi). Clem was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend to everyone.

Born in Nanning, Guangxi, China, Clem moved to Canada to attend McGill University and graduated with a degree in Civil Engineering. He began his career at Ontario Hydro but his entrepreneurial spirit drove him to complete his MBA and he launched several successful business ventures in civil engineering and real estate.

Clem’s passion for helping people and improving the well-being of the wider community saw him take on a number of key leadership roles with the Toronto Hong Kong Lions Clubs and the Toronto Chinese Business Association. He was also one of the founding organizers of the Toronto International Dragon Boat Race Festival and it is now a major sports event and tourism destination for the city. For his outstanding dedication and service to the community, Clem was awarded the 125th Anniversary of the Confederation of Canada Medal in 1993 followed by the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal in 2002.

Clem was an avid golfer, a member of the Bayview Golf & Country Club and a founding member of the Mandarin Golf & Country Club in 1991. In his retirement, he combined his love for golf with travel, chasing sunnier weather and fairways. Together with Lydia, Clem globetrotted on cruise liners carrying with him his golf bag and a sense of adventure.

Due to the current pandemic state of emergency, attendance at all funeral services are being held in private for immediate family only. You are invited to participate in the funeral visitation and service by joining the live-stream. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider making a donation in Clem’s honour to go to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada or North York General Hospital Foundation. A celebration of his life will take place when we can all gather again and share our memories. Condolences can be left at the Kane-Jerrett Website.

Eunice and I are deeply saddened by the passing of Clement. Lydia, please accept our heartfelt sympathies for your loss. Our thoughts are with you and your family during this difficult time.
I have known Clement since high school. We were classmates and roommates in McGill Engineering . We shared our notes and studies together. He was very concerned when I had the car accident and was not able to attend classes. He would often comfort and assist me in assignments. We shared good times like going to Plumbers Ball together and having good times at football games. We also shared hard time when we both were broke during a summer job hunting period. We had to share job hunting expenses and dinner portions. After graduation, we met in Toronto a few years later. We would meet quite often as we became business partners and joined the same investment club. Clement and Lydia were world travelers. During our investment club meetings, Clement would inform us of what actually happened around the world and the political and economic situations that would impact on investments. He would also entertain us with interesting things that happened during his trip with Lydia. We had not seen Clement since the pandemic We will miss Clement more than words can say. Rest in peace.

Clement and I graduated in the same year at McGill University. A notable coincidence is that my daughter Frances and his daughter Pamela also graduated in the same year at the University of Waterloo and they are good friends too.

My wife Mandy and I admire Clement's achievements in receiving the Confederation of Canada Medal and the Queen's Jubilee Medal.

Really saddened to hear of Clem's passing; my sincere condolences to you Lydia, and the whole family. Thinking back, I have known Clement for over 70 years, since our young teenage years, and we were classmates in Lingnam and Wah Yan. I have always been impressed by his laughters, his kindness, and his voice. I think he introduced us to the Mandarine Golf club. He was a great guy! Happy guy!
May he rest in peace in the arms of our Blessed Mother.

Clement was more than a brother to me. Our father passed away when I was an infant. Though Clement was my older brother by 8 years, he was almost like a father to me. He gave me love, guidance and encouragement, but he also disciplined me when I needed it. It did not happen often but even when I got into trouble, Clement set me straight in a constructive and positive way. Clement was a big influence in my life and though we didn't see each other often as we grew older and had our own families, I appreciate everything that he did for me. We really enjoy our time together when we visit each other.
The Atlantic Crossing Cruise with Clement, Lydia, Wendy and her husband is very enjoyable and will always be remembered
We will miss his smile, candor, humor and good nature.
Now brother, may you enjoy unlimited rounds of golf and exquisite fine wine.

Our sincere condolences to the Lee family, Lydia and daughters Pamela, Sabrina and Fiona. I had the pleasure of knowing Clement while we were both students, Clement in Engineering myself in Nursing. I attended a number of functions with Clement at the University and within the Chinese Student Group. I was present at his Engineer Ring Ceremony. I knew he would be successful in whichever direction his career would take. We reconnected in Toronto after we both had married our life partners and started families and kept loosely in contact with a visit in Toronto in 2003. Clement is now in a better place after his illness. Chris and Gary Beran
