Ed died on September 28, 2016 at Cummer Lodge. Born in Preston, Ontario, Ed began his proud career in newspaper and magazine publishing with Thomson Newspapers, then Southstar Publishers, and ended it as CEO of Southam Communications. During that time, he served on several boards, including the Toronto Board of Trade and the Children’s Aid Foundation. Post-retirement, Ed worked as a consultant to various small businesses, where he thoroughly enjoyed contributing his skills and knowledge to growing enterprises. An avid golfer and tennis player, he was a charter member of the Donalda Club and a long-time member of The Meadows in Sarasota, Florida. He was a Past-President of the National Club and a dedicated member of the Citation Club, where he will be remembered as an enthusiastic party-goer with a love for a sound investment, a “true” story and a good joke. Ed was a life-long lover of Broadway and movie musicals, Borscht-belt humour and dancing. Always optimistic, he lived by the motto, “Count your blessings” and considered himself to be a very lucky man. Ed was predeceased by his brothers Joe, Francis and Bernie. He is survived by his wife Isabel, his son Jamie, daughters Mary Shea (Mark), Theresa and Kathleen and their mother, Helene Mannion, and his beloved granddaughter, Colleen Shea. The family thanks the staff at Cummer Lodge and his personal caregivers, Opal, Sonia, Rosie and Jacqui, who cared for him so lovingly. Visitation will be held at the R.S. Kane Funeral Home at 6150 Yonge St., North York on Sunday, October 2nd from 2 to 5 p.m .
