Eva passed away peacefully on November 20, 2025, at the age of 91 at the Moll Berczy Haus, the German retirement residence in Toronto, after living with dementia for many years. Her gentle spirit, loving heart, and quiet strength will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
Born on February 18, 1934, in Guhrau, Germany, Eva was a kind-hearted, thoughtful, and hardworking woman whose grace and warmth were felt by everyone around her.
Eva was predeceased by her beloved husband of 48 years, Josef; her daughter Viola, who passed away at the age of 53; and her granddaughter Rochelle, who passed at 33. She was also predeceased by her brother Wolfgang and her sister Gabriele. She leaves behind her daughter Angela and son-in-law Thomas, as well as her cherished grandchildren Gabriella, Marlaena, Mason, and Sebastian. Eva is also survived by her sister Dorothea and her niece Felicitas in Germany.
Family was at the center of Eva’s life. She devoted herself wholeheartedly to those she loved and to the community that supported her. Her commitment to the Frauengruppe at the Danube Swabian Club in Toronto was unwavering, and earned her the provincial Volunteer Award in 2001. She is lovingly remembered by the staff at the Moll Berczy Haus, where she lived for 13 years.
Her life was marked by resilience. Forced to leave her home at the age of 10 at the end of World War II, and later making the difficult decision to leave East Germany just before the Berlin Wall closed in 1961—uncertain if she would ever see her family again. Eva and Josef met in 1965 in Frankfurt and married. She joined him in Toronto and they built a successful life together from humble beginnings—anchored in faith, friends, hard work, and love.
A visitation will be held at Blessed Trinity Parish, 3220 Bayview Ave., North York, ON, on November 29, 2025, at 9:30 a.m., followed by the Funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m. at the same location. Interment will take place at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery, 8361 Yonge St., Markham, ON.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made to the Alzheimer Society of Canada in memory of Eva.
