Peacefully, with her sons Peter and Barrie at her side, Florence May Rutherford (nee Dauphinee), in her 100th year at York Central Hospital, Toronto, June 28, 2008. "Midge" as she was known to her many friends throughout Canada, was predeceased by her loving husband of over 53 years, Douglas F. Rutherford in 1990. She was born in Halifax, N.S. on May 11, 1909, the only daughter of the late AEB Dauphinee and Florence (Mosher) Dauphinee. Her brothers Arthur (Jack), William (Bill) and Kenneth Dauphinee also have pre-deceased her. She was one of the few remaining survivors of the 1917 Halifax Explosion at the time of her passing. In addition to her sons, Barrie (Dorothy, "Mum's devoted daughter in-law") of Thornhill and Peter (Suzanne) of Mont Tremblant, she is survived by four (4) loving grandchildren , Karen (Rock) Lemay of Ottawa, Alison (Aidan), Grant (Lisa) and Jeffrey Rutherford all of Toronto, and four (4) great grandchildren, Kurt and Jenna Rose Lemay of Ottawa and Katelyn ( Katie) and Nathan Rutherford of Toronto. She celebrated her 99th birthday in Toronto this past May with all of her aforementioned family present for a wonderfully memorable family weekend which she so cherished. She was a lifelong devoted member of the Anglican Church of Canada starting with Saint Matthias in her native Halifax; St. John's Anglican in Edmonton, and most recently Holy Trinity of Thornhill where she assisted by coordinating monthly Anglican church services at Glynnwood Retirement Residence where she lived for the past 9 years. An Honorary Life Member of the I.O.D.E, she dedicated much of her life to various community services and volunteer work. She leaves her legacy in many ways with family and friends and will be lovingly remembered by all who had the good fortune to know her. As she wished, Cremation has already taken place. A Memorial Service will be held at Holy Trinity Anglican Church, 140 Brooke St. Thornhill on Thursday July 3, 2008 at 2:30 PM with Rev Canon Greg Physick officiating. In lieu of flowers, at her specific request, donations can be made in her memory to St. Johns Anglican Church, Edmonton, Holy Trinity Anglican Church Thornhill, or the charity of your choice.
