passed away September 28th at the Veteran's Residence of Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto at age 90. He is survived by Phyllis, his loving wife and companion of 62 years; daughters Susan, Elizabeth, and Barbara; sons-in-law Richard Pearen and Robert English; grandchildren James, Claire, Jacquelyn, and Taylor; siblings Eleanor, John, Maynard, and Frances; pre-deceased by siblings Mary and Bob.
Before and after serving in WWII with the 5th Canadian Signal Corp, he worked for 34 years with what is now the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce. His volunteer service personified his commitment to community: long term devoted member of St. Augustine's Church, executive member of Learning and Living in Retirement, recreation board member for the Town of Leaside. He was an excellent duplicate bridge player, winemaker, and gardener. As an avid outdoors man, he left us with many fond memories of camping, canoeing and skiing. However, among all of these interests, tennis was his first love. He played, taught, and competed all of his life; he was a champion. He was a founding member of the Leaside Tennis Club, maintained membership in the Badminton and Racquet Club for over forty years, and served on the executive and as director respectively of these organizations. As a team member of the International Lawn Tennis Club of Canada, he was invited to put his foot on the centre court at Wimbledon.
In lieu of flowers, please consider memorial donations to the Canadian Diabetes Association, Canadian Heart and Stroke Association, or the Sunnybrook Foundation.
