After losing my own father, Kris Astaphan, to cancer in June 2013, the loss of Mr. Chang, one of my father's closest friends, was like sticking a knife in an old wound. As a result, it has taken me a long time to be able to write this message... Mr. Chang has always been the most helpful, kind, and amazing person toward myself and my family. In spite of his busy schedule, whenever I have needed help and advice, he has come to my aid and treated me like one of his own children. I will never forget his kindness, wisdom, humbleness and graciousness. He treated me like a father after the loss of my own. Sending all of my love to Donette and his children.

I met Raymond through Donnette and he was very gracious to me whenever we met, regardless of the circumstances. I value the philanthropic side of him, especially being aware that most of his donations were made anonymously. That speaks volumes.

Even here in Miami, we are saddened by the sudden passing of this giant of a man. He served his high school, universities, work places & countries admirably and without any second thoughts. He will be sadly missed. "I have fought the good fight; I have finished the race !!!"

Some years ago, I first connected with Mr. Chang when I called him to ask about the St. George's College annual dinner dance which I had recently became aware of.  Mr. Chang answered the telephone himself and talked to me for almost an hour.  I felt so comfortable talking with him that we even discussed my brother who is a person living with disabilities and talked about the issue of disabled adults in Jamaica and ways in which those issues could be addressed, among many other things.  Following that initial conversation, Mr. Chang treated me like an old friend every time I saw him or talked with him.  I will remember him fondly.

I remember Ray telling me the success to any business is to hire the right people "and then get out of their way." Great advice but a real challenge for type A personalities like me. Nonetheless, I have tried to follow that advice as often as I can and it works. I will miss Ray very much.

On behalf of our family, we express our deepest condolence to the Chang Family. We will miss Ray as a friend and he is certainly a loss to the wider community.

R.I.P. - Return If Possible - Mr. Chang! You've shown those who listened and observed the power of education and focus.

By all accounts, it is clear that the depth and breadth of the impact of Ray’s kindness to everyone he met is immeasurable. So it would stand to reason that the impact of his loss is unfathomable, especially to his family and close friends. Donette, Andrew, and Brigette, we are truly sorry for you and all your family at this time, but we’re sure that the seeds he has planted in others will continue to flourish, and his inspiration will fuel good deeds for many years to come. Onward and upward Ray! The Lord said He has prepared many mansions, and I'm sure He's looking forward to you organizing a makeover.

I remember the conversations and interviews I had with Ray about various things.His humility and insights were profound, his friendliness very real and his smile made it easy to engage him in a discussion.I saw how much he was loved, especially at the 'You Make Us Proud' event at a hotel in Markham in 2007 where the Jamaican Chinese community celebrated him. My condolences to his wife, Donette; daughter, Bridgette;son, Andrew; grandchildren, and the rest of his family. A light has been extinguished but its flame will never be forgotten.
