I am so very sorry for your loss. Jim was my first co-op boss at Occidental Life in 1981. He was a smart and really fun guy to work with. Over the years I ran into Jim a number of times at various actuarial events - he was a colourful character and definitely not your stereotypical boring actuary. His humour and intellect will be missed in the actuarial community.

I was saddened to learn of Jim's passing today.  Although I only met Jim a few times as a fellow volunteer on a Canadian Institute of Actuaries committee, he left a lasting impression. I enjoyed hearing stories from his considerable travels and learning about his professional career.  He was extremely proud of being an actuary and gave back a tremendous amount to the profession.  His warm smile and sense of humour will not be forgotten.  My condolences to the Doherty family during this difficult time.

I am shocked and saddened to learn of Jim's death.  I have known Jim for about 40 years, ever since he was employed as an actuarial student at London Life.  We reconnected when he became involved with the activities of the International Actuarial Association and my wife, Mary, and I reflect on many enjoyable meals organized by Jim for Canadian representatives at the semi-annual meetings of the IAA committees in such exotic locations as Zagreb, Hyderabad, and Tallinn.  Jim's considerable contributions to the actuarial profession, both in Canada and internationally are a marvelous legacy.

I was shocked to hear of Jim's passing.  As an actuary, I worked in his group at OSFI for some time plus was currently on a CIA committee for which he was the vice-chair.  Condolences to his family.

My deepest sympathies go out to you and your family. It was an honor to have known such a great person and I enjoyed listening to all the travel stories from Jim, the fantastic summer BBQs at his house as long as working with him in OSFI.  He will be truly missed.

Jim was a huge contributor to the actuarial profession, and could always be counted on for an interesting conversation. He will be missed by many.

I got to know Jim over the last few years through work and through our weekly games of squash at the Cambridge Club.  I'll miss his competitiveness, our chats after playing and his sense of humour.  I enjoyed his company and only wish we could have had more opportunities to share our experiences.

Jim was a straight shooter.  A new thing in the Showers household!  His conversations were sharp, but never with malice.
Jim's faith was an evident foundation for all he did in his life.  It is even easier to see that now.  It is a shame "for us" that he is not her to further that with his children and grandchildren.
He was a kind helper to his Mother and Father in Law.  He would build things and was always available to come over and lend a hand.
I am glad he pursued and wooed and married my sister.  They made a remarkable couple.  He will be missed in the family.
It was certainly my loss by not being closer to Jim through the years. I will miss that opportunity.

I had the privilege to work briefly with Jim on one of OSFI's most important projects last year.  His vision was an inspiration to those of us working closely with him.  He will be missed.  Sincere condolences to the Doherty family on your loss.

Jim was a man of honor, dignity, and compassion.  I knew him only on a professional level, as the regulator of my member life insurance societies in Canada.  But his dedication to serving and protecting Canadian consumers, and his commitment to working with the organizations for which he had oversight authority to help them understand and comply with an increasingly complex global regulatory environment was admirable, and set the standard of professionalism for his peers and colleagues. Jim was a terrific man, with a sharp mind, wry wit, and great disposition. A very easy person to like, he was always thoughtful and considerate, and punctuated his words with a smile and a special glint in his eye - that we will remember forever.  

I came to know Jim through his work at both Ernst and Young and the Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions, where he was unerringly astute and helpful to all who knew him.

I am so very sorry to hear of Jim's passing. Though we had lost touch over the years, I remember him as a "force" to be reckoned with when worked together at EY. I was shocked and saddened
To hear this, this morning.  I remember this family dearly. Megan and i use be best friends in school and have fun memories of her whole family.   Prayers for Barb and whole family 

So many memories and still some of the best days of my life will always be associated with Jim!

I recall his generous gift of a sound system to our fledgling little church.  He and I went shopping at RADIO SHACK (which will tell you how long ago that was!)

To Barb, Megan, Seumas, and all of the family ... 

Because of Christ, there is NEVER a FINAL "goodbye."

May you lean on one another, and know that your husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend has found his way safely home and into the arms of his Saviour.

Barb and family – our sincerest condolences from both of us on Jim’s passing.  
I first met Jim in 1995 when he visited London Ontario to help me on a major transaction of one of my clients.  In that first meeting Jim showed his energy, sharp wit and that ever-present mischievous twinkle in his eye, and over the next 20 years those traits never wavered.  
Jim had a passion for teaching – whether it was coaching audit staff on actuarial reserves, helping a new company director get up to speed on the complexities of the life insurance industry or teaching others how to improve their squash game.  Jim was generous too – he was always better than me on the squash court but he would often pass up a winning shot to keep a volley going so I could improve my backhand.  
I remember many lunches at PJ O’Brien’s where, while Jim sipped his cider, he would hold court discussing his passions of cottages, squash, and insurance. PJ's was definitely one of his happy places.
We will miss him dearly.

Randy and I are so sorry for your loss of Jim. Our memory of you both was when we first went to Lincoln Road Chapel and attended the small group in your home. We were impacted by your hospitality and welcome and Jim's love for you Barb! I remember seeing flowers he gave you...just because. You will all certainly be in our prayers in the days ahead.
