Lyall was born in Regina, Saskatchewan and was raised by his grandmother Georgina Gogan nee Turner. Lyall married Frances Waldegger in her home town of Dysart Saskatchewan and she was lovingly at his side for 57 years through all his moves overseas and in compassionately caring for him in his later years. Lyall’s memory will be held close by his daughters Lynda of Toronto, Michelle (Alex Young) of Toronto, Maria (Vic Simpson) of Ottawa and son Lyall Mark (Claudia Calderon) of Ottawa. He was adored grandfather to Julie, Connor and Jamie McGee; Jonathan and Christopher Young; Tristan, Jayden and Emilia Simpson; Mateo, Victoria and Octavia Molleken. Lyall is survived by sister Marilyn McCall; brother-and sister-in-laws Stanley and Carmen Waldegger, Robert and Marlene Waldegger; cousins Dick, Pat and Ken Varley; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his mother Wilberta Johnstone, Aunt Avis and Uncle Bob Varley.
Lyall received his Chartered Accounting degree while working with Deloitte, Plender, Haskin & Sales in Regina. He spent the rest of his career with Price Waterhouse making Partner status at a young age. Initially he was transferred to Caracas Venezuela (1965 – 1972) where he enjoyed the warm weather and comradeship of fellow Canadians so much he remained overseas [Tehran, Iran (1972-1978) and Madrid, Spain (1978-2003)]. In 2004, already showing signs of dementia and severe depression he retired to Toronto with Frances to be close to his children.
Lyall had a unique sense of wit leaving his family forever puzzled over his arsenal of jokes (“Derk McGerk don’t go through that revolving door”) and he was a huge sports fan (Go Roughriders! Go BlueJays!) which he listened to religiously on the radio and on taped broadcasts when he did not have television access. Lyall was an accomplished professional, a wonderful husband, father and grandfather and will be forever remembered for his sense of humour, generosity and gentle nature. He will be profoundly missed.
We wish to thank Seniors Health Care staff, especially Suzie, for caring for him the last two months.
