With deep sorrow and abiding faith, we announce the peaceful passing of Maximus Herbert Perera on September 19, 2025, at the age of 91. Max was a devout Catholic whose life bore witness to his unwavering faith, his generous heart, and his deep love for his family and friends.
Born in Sri Lanka on April 30, 1934, Max was the oldest of 6 children. He started his career in the Sri Lankan army and was lucky to have been sent to study engineering at Peradeniya university where he met the love of his life. He immigrated to Canada in his 30s, embracing his new home with open arms and a grateful heart. His love for his adopted country was palpable – anyone who knew Max will remember his signature Canadian flag tie and his pride in being a Canadian.
Max was predeceased by his beloved wife, Philomena Perera, in 2014. They were fondly known by their friends as “Maxi and Philo”. Their love was deep and enduring – so much so that even after her passing, he remained devoted to her memory, establishing the Philo Foundation in her honour, a testament to the impact she had on his life and the lives of others.
Max was the proud and loving father of Cheryl (Rosh), Roshan (Angela), and Michelle (Brian). He felt his children had wonderful partners and loved his “in-law kids” very much. His joy was magnified by his six cherished grandchildren: Lucas, Tobias, Max, Charlie, Sophie, and Georgia, all of whom adored their “Seeya”. His face lit up at the mention of their names, and he never missed an opportunity to speak proudly of their accomplishments, encourage them or to simply share a laugh with them.
Max spent his professional life as an engineer with the Ministry of Transportation, a career he loved and excelled in. He was committed to improving the lives of others not only through his work, but also through his many volunteer efforts, including with Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) where he was bestowed with Officer of the Professional Engineers Ontario Order of Honour and the Ontario Society of Professional Engineers (OSPE) of which he was a founding member. His generous spirit extended into countless charitable efforts, always giving of his time or resources – quietly and humbly – to those in need.
Max was a man who made everyone feel seen. He valued his connections to people and revelled in their happiness and successes and deeply felt their pain and suffering. His enthusiastic greetings made you feel important and loved. Outgoing and kind with a hearty laugh, Max had a way of bringing light into every room he entered.
Max enjoyed friendships that endured from his youth to his passing. He loved all his friends very much and enjoyed their company. He could often be heard howling with mischievous laughter when he visited with them.
In his final years, Max remained active, always with a project on the go, usually engaging his friends or his kids to ensure these projects came to life.
We find comfort in knowing that he is now resting in the peace of Christ, whom he served so faithfully.
A Funeral Mass to celebrate Max’s life will be held at Blessed Trinity Parish on Saturday, September 27th, 9:30 a.m., followed by interment at Holy Cross Cemetery in Thornhill. Should you wish, donations can be made to Blessed Trinity Parish or Aptus Treatment Centre continuing Max’s legacy of love, generosity, and service.
“Well done, good and faithful servant... enter into the joy of your Lord.” – Matthew 25:23
Dad will be missed more than words can say and he will be in our hearts forever.
