I'm so sorry to hear about Mr. Smith's passing. 
I had the pleasure of working for Mr. Smith for 10 years at YDG&CC.
He took a very young 8 year old caddy, and in a few years, allowed him to work in the back shop.
A few more years went by, and he promoted that same young man to the Pro Shop and work as the Caddy Master.
I then was promoted to work with some of the best people (Paul Jennings, John Houck, Alex Williams) and learned many valuable "life" skills.
I can honestly say it was the best job i've every had, and I left YDG&CC at the end of the summer when I turned 18.
Yes, i should have kept in touch, but at 18 I had other things on my mind, and looking back  -- I wish i could have thanked him for all is kindness.
I still, to this day, see his smiling face, cigar in his mouth,  and saying -- "how are you son?" or his always famous .." you gotta have a system son --"
I can still remember him inviting "the boys" over for a great steak dinner at his house and a couple of cold beverages.  What boss does that -- not a boss, but a truly compassionate and understanding man.
He was/is a great influencer in my life, and yes Mr. Smith -- "I have a system" -- and i'm doing well.
I hope you are enjoying the endless 18's and of course, a nice cold beverage on the 19th.
For now, i'm playing through, but i'm sure i'll catch you on the back 9 when my time comes.





I will miss my Uncle Norm, fondly known as my "other Dad" more than words can express. He was the one in my life as well as my Brother's after my own Dad's passing, who was always there for our family. Always there to give us the extra push we needed in school, or teaching my brother Darren and myself to be the very best we could be. My fondest memories are with my family and Auntie Aud and Uncle Norm. So many happy memories I am blessed with. My favourite was running across the street in my jammies when we lived on Geraldton, just to have a quick BBQ and enjoy an impromptu hour of their company. I'm sure my father, Jack Cross, would be happy to know that his very best friend is out of the pain he endured for so long. Uncle Norm, I love you. You were the father I so desperately needed throughout my life and I thank you for the love, support and guidance you gave to me. I would not be the person I am today without you and I will miss you so very much. My sincere condolences to the Smith Family and my love to my very special Auntie Audrey. Love Darlene

Dear Audrey and family, It was with a heavy heart that I heard from my mom of Norm's passing. I personally always looked forward to a chat and some shared 'banter' with him when I ran into you two at the building. I'll always cherish the memories of his friendship with my folks, the winemaking(and drinking,of course!), the shared jokes and Bingo games with all of us at Skymark and the general all-round great guy he was. To Audrey and the family - Dad and I were deeply saddened to read of Norm's passing. Dad remembers well the great golf games they had, especially the Bermuda tournaments.He wanted to attend the funeral but, at almost 102 yrs., he doesn't go out anymore.
