June 28, 1925 – October 18, 2025
It is with deep love and sadness that we announce the passing of Paul Bidwell Stone, who died peacefully surrounded by his family at his daughter Wendy’s home in Freelton on Saturday, October 18th, 2025, at the age of 100.
Born in Toronto on June 28th, 1925, Paul lived a long, full, and vibrant life. From a young age, he showed a passion for sports, excelling in track and field at Lawrence Park Collegiate, where he achieved records in high jump. His enthusiasm for athletics carried throughout his life—He would often recall golf games played in his youth with friends Hugh, Cam and Mac, remembering each hole and the challenges of the game. He coached his daughters basketball team and inspired all his children to take part in sports. Paul even created an ice rink in the back yard of Empress to encourage skating each winter.
Paul’s love for his country was evident in his service during World War II, where he proudly enlisted to serve Canada. After the war, he continued to celebrate the beauty of his homeland through his art. A talented painter, Paul captured the essence of landscapes, streetscapes, people, and beloved pets with his personal warmth and detail.
He found great joy in the outdoors and spent many years on his farm in Richmond Hill, tending to his trees with dedication and care—often with his children working by his side. Known for his sharp mind and quick wit, Paul would often recite poetry and Shakespeare from memory which he retained well into his later years..
Paul was predeceased by the love of his life and wife of 70 years, Muriel Antonia Stone (Feb. 15, 1929-Jan. 4, 2022), and by their son Paul Stone (Nov. 23, 1956-Mar. 21, 1987). We miss them both deeply. Paul's brother Jack Stone (June 2 ,1922-July 3, 2018) whom he loved and respected.
He is survived by his children: Colleen Howat (Ian), Wendy Thrasher (Gary- June 23, 1949-July 15, 2014), Linda Stone (Dan Peldiak), and Gordon Stone (Holly); and by his daughter-in-law Debbie Kennedy. He is also survived by his grandchildren Doug, Meaghan, Kyrsten, Amy, Erin, Danny, Kelly, Paul, Avery, Savannah, Sophia, and Duke; and his great-grandchildren Riley, Claire, Quinn, Jack, Sam, Bowen, and Rooney. What an amazing family he and Muriel created.
Paul will be laid to rest at York Cemetery in a private family gathering. A joint celebration of life for both Paul and Muriel will be held in the spring.
Paul will be remembered for his strength, humor, creativity, and the unwavering love he shared with his family. His legacy lives on in the art he created, the trees he planted, and the generations he inspired.
