Richard died peacefully, surrounded by family, on March 11, 2023. He was the loving father of Deborah Flawn, Brian Shibley (Susan), and Kevin Shibley (Colleen). Grandfather of Carolynne Knight (Andrew), Danielle Flawn (Michael), Trevor Shibley, Christopher Flawn (Lauren), Andrea Paul (Martin), Jacob Shibley and Matthew Shibley. Great-Grandfather of, Micaela, Carson, Charlotte, Collin, Tristyn, Nash, Theodore, Sidney and Samantha. Richard has gone to rest with his beloved wife Mary Grace Shibley.
Richard was born April 10, 1929 to Teresa and Joseph Shibley in Port Colborne, Ontario. He met the love of his life Mary (Root), in Toronto in 1952 and they married on October 9th 1954. Richard was the founding partner of the Toronto law firm Shibley Righton LLP in 1964. He and Mary raised their three children in Toronto, Ontario and "retired" to Tiny Beaches, Ontario in 1996, although Richard continued to practice law until 2014, at the age of 85.
Richard lived a life of purpose, joy and love. He had a great passion for the law which he practiced successfully well into his eighties. His career accomplishments are many and once retired he drew on the memories of his time practicing the law with great affection, pride and sense of accomplishment.
Richard was a man who placed great value in learning and education. He felt a drive to continue educating himself and experiencing the world throughout the entirety of his life. Richard was a lover of music and spent much of his childhood playing the violin and debating music theory with his best friend Elmer Isler. He taught himself how to ski at the age of 40, travelled the world as an adult, got his pilot licence in his 40's, went skydiving on his 80th birthday and continued to enrich his life through the arts in Toronto in his later years. Richard was a man who was truly interested in the world around him and most especially in the people whom he loved. He was a people person and nothing gave him more happiness and energy than to be surrounded by friends and family.
Above all, Richard was a loving, thoughtful and compassionate man, whose generosity knew no bounds. He listened with his heart, and responded with wisdom. He put the needs and well-being of those he loved above all else and he and Mary taught his family the true value and meaning of family which has been instilled throughout the generations. His memory will live on forever in the hearts of those who were lucky enough to know his love.
