Ronald Thomas Velanoff

On March 19, 2022, heaven recalled one of its greats. Ronald Thomas Velanoff, or to those who knew and loved him “Ronnie”, died at home after courageously battling pulmonary fibrosis. Ron kept his trademark sense of humour to the end and treasured visits from his family and friends, where he reveled in beating them at gin. Born in Toronto on October 28, 1940, 15-minutes behind his “older” twin-brother Donald, sons of Louis and Ruth Velanoff (nee Cain), predeceased by younger brother Jack. Ron was a proud Macedonian and came from a distinguished line of lawyers who were well-known in the Macedonian community. Ron began his career as a young lawyer by partnering with his father Louis under the firm Velanoff & Velanoff. He continued to practice up to December 2021, an impressive career spanning 48 years.

Ron’s great passions in life were his family, his friends, singing, and golfing. Bayview Country Club provided the perfect setting for all of them, where Ron was a member for over 60 years. It was here that he spent much of his time and developed countless friendships that he treasured.

Ron gave us his gift of humour, his gift of entertaining, but most importantly his gift of an open heart. Ron was authentic and compassionate and was quick to organize a group or an event to help a friend in need. There was always an open seat at his supper table over the holidays, just in case there was someone who would otherwise have been alone.

Ron is survived by his wife Carol, his twin brother Don, daughter Lisa and son-in-law Steve, daughter Andrea, granddaughter Alexandra and mother-in-law Mary Hughes. He will be greatly missed by his extended family.
