I was so saddened to hear about Tom’s passing from Covid in 2020. I first metTom at UofT Electrical Engineering where we were both on the Electrical club as class reps. We also worked together at IBM in the Transportation Utilities &Communications branch, where he was our resident telecom expert.  Tom was true Engineer and was passionate about everything did in network design. He was a good friend and will be missed. May he Rest In Peace.

Tom was a good friend and an outstanding skipper.  He was a skilled tactician with a keen desire to win races.  But Tom never criticized mistakes or yelled at his crew--rare qualities in a racing skipper.  Takulli II was a fun boat to sail on.  Now whenever I see sailboats on Lake Ontario, I think of Tom.

Tom was great to work with and had great expertise . But he was also a good buddy. We had fun times together and was a good team player. Yes, he talked a lot about his family and country place.

I was very sad to find out only today from my cousin Agi(Hortobagyi) about Tomas passing on, and I'm so sorry. 
We hadn't seen each other in many years but then re connected when both Tomas's mother and my father, in the same assisted living facility...were both about to pass away, within a couple of days of each other. Tomas was so kind and helpful and warm, even though we were both having a hard time emotionally ...we even got to laugh some when he reminded me that you two had really met at a party at my parents house, which brought back a whole bunch of memories of scouts and even skiing in the Laurentians.

We were very sad to hear the news of Tom's passing, one of many victims of the global virus epidemic.

A highly respected senior professional at IBM,  Tom was also a competitive sailor, active in community affairs.

Not a day goes by that we don't look across the street and think of you Judy and then remember something about Tom.  You have both been such a blessing to us as neighbours and we had such fondness for Tom.  A favourite memory that comes up is Tom's enthusiasm for animals that he shared with Matthew (and Rebekah).  There are few people who would have immediately recognized a young boy's home made snake catcher or be excited to  welcome him to the woodpile to look for salamanders and skinks!  Matthew loved that about Tom.  He also loved the time Tom worked with him on the lawnmower.  He is so proud of what he learned and what he was able to do with the lawnmower after that.  Those will always be fond memories for us and we will always be grateful for the enthusiasm he shared in the kids' education.  

I remember trying to catch Tom on a quarter ton class brew race at NYC. Every time we tacked he would cover us and protect his lead. He showed good sportsmanship and his enthusiasm for friendly sailboat racing

Tom was a great neighbour who always had a smile on his face.  Our family will miss seeing him outside in the yard and receiving late night waves from the office window.

Tom and I were at IBM at the same time, but we didn't really get to know each other until after we had both retired, and then as acquaintances, rather than fast friends.  

But our acquaintance strengthened through the Knights of Columbus, when I asked Tom to fill in for me at the Good Shepherd soup kitchen when I couldn't do my regular "shift".  All the staff and volunteers were highly complimentary of the way he handled the duties with compassion, humour and generosity -- something I witnessed as well.

Tom, we will all  miss you.  Godspeed on your final journey.

I was severely taken aback when I read about Tom in the paper today.

I knew Tom at IBM where we were both Systems Engineers, both of us with deep knowledge of networks and telecommunications, we had many interactions on how to best solve customer issues, and then working towards a final solution. His focus was always on the customer value and social value we brought into a diversity of complex situations.  I admired his approach, openness, and viewpoints.

Over the past decade we met several times a year, usually for lunch, and our conversations changed from so called techie stuff, to our interests, retirement objectives, and our families.

We had planned to get together in late February this year, but had to postpone until early May. I will miss him.

I can see from all the comments here the phenomenal range of people that he has touched. May he rest in peace, well regarded for a life well lived and friends deeply loved.

Tom was one of the most positive guys I ever knew, always looking for the good outcome in a rough situation.

I just learned from the weekly Hungarian Newspaper the sudden and most unfortunate circumstance of Tamas' passing. I knew Tamas as the cheerful friendly younger brother of Anna Maria (Mokus)  and their late kind parents, Laci bacsi and Marta neni who were also my parents' friends.
If my memory is not mistaken, Tamas escorted first time Hungarian Helicon Ball debutante, Judit, at the  "Inn-of- the-Park" hotel in 1961, who later became his wife.
After Tamas joined the Hungarian Helicon Society, I believe he also became president of the society after my retirement in 1978.
His exemplary contribution to the Hungarian community was most outstanding and appreciated by all who got to know him.
My sincere condolences to all his family.

Brother Tom jointed our Council on March 12th 1993 and was actively involved in numerous service programs. One in particular was when Brother Tom presented a Christmas Creche in 2015 at the Keeping Christ in Christmas Program as seen in the photo.
He was a dedicated member with a captive personality who served as Program Director and Deputy Grand Knight. We had the pleasure of his company as recently as Sunday, February 23rd during the Pancake Breakfast.

I knew Tom from both shared times at IBM and also the National Yacht Club. However, I have to admit that I was an "acquaintance" rather than a "friend",  which I now regret because I should have made an effort back then to get to know him better. I do remember him as being a true gentleman... and a really classy guy. 
I have diligently read every single one of the tributes paid to him in this forum and it is so obvious that he was respected and loved by so, so many people...  RIP, Tom.. and condolences to your family. 



We are deeply saddened by Tom's passing. So many memories of him in the Hungarian Scouts, Helicon Society and get-togethers at his dear friend Nick Tomory's place.

I had the great opportunity to work with Tom at Hydro One Telecom at the end of his career.  Although it was for a short period of time (18 months), I learned a great deal from Tom about the telecom business and helping me transition into my new role as a project manager.

I had the privilege of knowing Tom through his volunteer activities at the Society of St. Vincent de Paul (SSVP) and Knights of Columbus of St Bonaventure Parish. He was very friendly and always with a genuine smile.
My memory of him is etched by one of the penultimate assignments I did with him to deliver a SSVP Christmas Basket. While waiting for the client to let us into the apartment building, I posed an intrusive question about his background. I explained my Nigerian origin and just retired from a career in Saudi Arabia. Tom proudly shared his Hungarian, Argentinean and Torontonian roots. I was fascinated by his love of sports and he was eagerly looking forward to a European trip. You can imagine how saddened and shocked I was to learn of his untimely and sudden passing due to the COVID 19 virus.

 So many wonderful memories of Tom come crowding back.  His parents and my parents were good friends and we became friends because of that before I was even a teenager.  Later, through Hungarian Scouts and the Hungarian community that connection was strengthened and became more layered:  our lives, our circles of friends, the phases of our maturing selves ran on parallel tracks.  It was lovely to see Tom, whether it was a surprise visit from him one long ago  Easter Monday for the Hungarian custom of "locsolás" when I was only fourteen years old, thrilled to my core that one of the so-called 'older-way-cool' boys would bother to notice me.  Or the many, wonderful conversations with him whenever we ran into each other at some church event.  He was always so interested in things and genuinely concerned about people.   A bright light has gone out and our world is poorer for it.   My deepest condolences to you and the family.

I was shocked and saddened to hear about Tom’s passing. Tom and Takulli, as part of the 1/4 ton fleet, represented some of my fondest memories of racing at NYC over the past decades. Tom was always the quintessential gentleman and a genuinely nice person to be around. I will miss seeing his smile and exchanging “high, how are yah’s” on  Tuesday nights at the club.  Fair winds and following seas Tom. 

I met Tom through the Blue Mountain ski boys:  Andy, Drew, Ted and Tim.  He was always so kind to me and on the chairlifts you  have time to chat about your lives, reflecting on your past, and your hopes and plans for the future.  He was so excited to begin his new retirement plans for 2020.  I was both saddened and shocked to learn of his death.  My deepest sympathies go to his wife, family and friends.    I would be honoured to attend a celebration of his life when it is possible.

Near the end of your trip, Tom took the time to Email us information to help get Michelle home, as the two of you were doing the same.  I (Karen) had just spoke with you, Judy,  the day after you got home from your trip.  You even said everything seemed fine.  I was so relieved.  Tom was a dear friend for over 50 years. Always enjoyed his drops ins as he walked past our home.  Best fishing companion for Steve.  Steve especially enjoyed when the two of them went out fishing ridiculously early in the morning and discussed everything from family life to world issues and still managed to catch a few fish! Erica and I sailed with Tom and are profoundly sad to hear of his unfortunate passing. 

Even upon enduring many struggles encountered during the final days of our voyage and the worries and challenges of travelling home safely with his dear friends, Tom demonstrated sincere  empathy and quality of character to help friends and new acquaintances with positive advice and a cheerful smile.

While wishing  and working so earnestly for a happy conclusion for all, stranded as far as we could be from Canada, Tom's contributions  were valuable  and we are so sad his best efforts ultimately failed to save him from the unexpected and unimaginable degree of risk which arose during his return home. 

I'm certain our full group of Canadians were blessed to have him amongst us and are all the better for having known such a thoughtful and compassionate gentleman. A humble hero, that's how I'll remember Tom.

My fondest memories of Tom are about skiing.  The Four Amigos made many forays into BC, Ontario and Quebec, augmented by other folks.  Here is a photo of the crew from February 2007 at Red Mountain: Andy, Tom, Drew and Peter.  I have other photos but this one with the snow, great sun and wonderful comrades stands out.  We will miss our friend Tom and his careful diction and awesome wit.   May we all have memories as wonderful.

Tom and I go way back to University of Toronto, Electrical Engineering where we worked together on the Engineering Society student government. He was a year behind me. We both had long careers at IBM, where we worked together several times. Tom was a brilliant "techie" Systems Engineer, especially around telecommunications. He had an infectious personality and zest for life and learning new things.  He will be missed. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family on this sad occasion.

Tom was a fellow Hungarian, a co-worker. His sparkling happiness and joy of life was a welcome addition to our group reunions. Tom attended almost every one, except when he lost his father-in-law. Tom could recite the names of Hungarian dishes by heart, every time I saw him. I am devastated to hear this sad news. He will be remembered for ever, in our hearts. I remember when you and Tom first started dating.  We became aware of it at cserkesz tabor one summer. I remember my friends and I were very happy that such a nice, kind boy had found a nice, kind girl to spend time with.  To us it was kind of magical.  I was very happy when I heard that you and Tom were married and then welcomed your first child.  I lost track for a while and then I met Tom one day in the cafeteria at IBM.  I was only there for a short time as a temp before I started nursing school.  He was still the same nice, kind man that I remembered.

My heartfelt thoughts are with you during this difficult and sudden loss. We were neighbors for a few years in Don Mills where Tom and I had regular conversations about his family, friends, work and the beauty of life, no matter what the circumstance. We also went on many runs together, the most memorable being at the time of 911 when we shared a hug at the end recognizing that life is precious and could change at any moment. To this day, whenever I garden in the hot summer sun, I think of Tom and the break we took from our gardening endeavors enjoying the ice-cold Popsicle on his front steps - it was the best Popsicle. I have fond memories of Tom from working with him at IBM in the DPSS department, although not on the same projects. After early retirement for both of us we saw each other occasionally at our department lunches.
Tom always had an interesting story to tell, had good insights about the industry, and was always interested in what you were doing.

Our heart is aching and our minds want to reject all news. Tom’s sudden passing rocked our reality! Please accept our heartfelt sadness and earnest prayers for you and your amily to bear this difficult time with steadfast strength and unshakable Faith in the Everlasting Life! 
We’ve known you and Tom since the Helicon Picnic at Queenston Heights and remember fondly how you and he played with our then 3 year old daughter (now 50).  Unforgettable memories… Palotás dances, Helicon and Rákoczi Balls, Cserkész Vacsoras and house parties,  picking up from where we last left off, no matter how long the intervals between. Our last memory of Tom was his unbridled joy this January, at the Rakoczi Ball, as we toasted to the birth of your newest Granddaughter!  
Tom lived life to its fullest and gave himself wholeheartedly to all he did. Peter and I shared with him how we were planning an evening of singing Folk Songs to lift the gloom of winter. Tom’s eyes lit up as he shared with us how he’s been listing all the songs he recalled from his youth that he sang around campfires with his Scout Friends and yearned to sing them together again! 
Our songs will ring out, in your honour, dear Friend!

Dear Judy and Family,
Hearing about Tom’s sudden passing filled our hearts with deep sorrow. I’ve known Tom since we were young kids and our families’ history goes back to Argentina. We shared many amazing experiences through scouting. My fondest of these was attending the 1963 Scout World Jamboree in Marathon, Greece. I will always remember the fun we had attending camp and exploring Athens. For two teenagers this was an unforgettable experience. Teri knew Tom from her years in Toronto, through Scouts and Helicon. We both remember him fondly and will miss him. May God’s grace and your memories bring you and your family healing and comfort through this difficult time. 

Goodbye, old friend. We grew up together but then life separated our experiences. Still, you and Judy are, and will always be, part of my life journey. It's hard to accept that you've moved on already. You will always be part of my memories. Judy, my deepest sympathies for you and your family. 

I have many fond memories of  Tuesday evenings at the National Yacht Club,  competing against Tom and his crew on Takulli.  We had a lot of laughs, and way too much fun. Tom was an ultimate gentleman, and a truly classy human being. I last spoke to Tom about this time a year ago, and he was excited about the next chapter in his life - travelling, relaxing, spending time with friends and family. I cannot express in words how sad I am to hear this news. Judy, my heart goes out to you. Please know that you, and Tom, are in my thoughts.

I fondly remember " the De La Salle" boys so active in their high school years. Then later as scout leaders and best buddies with Árpád Cserkész Csapat - the morning flag raisings, friendship bonding over the years and the huge family campfires. Tom was a great friend of my first husband and I. I remember the ski trips we took as a group of Hungarians , to Blue Mountain. We reconnected again , when I joined the Kodály dance group again . During Hungarian events, he always made a point of coming up to me and asking what I was up to . He was kind , smart , with a wonderful sense of humor. My heart goes out to Judy . My condolences and prayers to her and her children and grandchildren. He will be greatly missed. He was much loved by all who knew him. May God give strength and peace to Judy and her family . He will live on in them.

It was always such a delight stopping to chat with Tom when we would meet up with him on our daily walks.  He was so friendly, smart and upbeat.  You are all in our thoughts and prayers. Tom  was the first neighbour to walk over to our house right after we moved in to graciously say 'welcome to the neighbourhood.' Since then, we have always found him to have a strong and unflappable presence on Plateau Crescent. He was always pleasant, courteous and quick with a smile, and sometimes a good story. We will miss him.
