Born in Ohio on July 8, 1944, to Eleanor and James Garrus Sr., James grew up with a strong sense of duty, integrity, and love for his country. He attended Ohio State University, proudly graduating with a bachelor’s degree in business. A true Buckeye, he carried that pride with him throughout his life.
James served honorably in the United States Army for two years and one day, earning the Army Commendation Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, and the Vietnam Service Medal. His time in uniform exemplified his commitment to service and the values he held dear.
After his military service, James dedicated 35 years to the Department of Defense, where he played a key role in managing the Titan Missile project. Though he was offered several promotions throughout his career, he chose to stay close to home and family — a decision that defined the kind of man he was. He retired in 2007, leaving behind a legacy of excellence and quiet leadership.
James was married to the love of his life, Sandra Garrus, for 31 wonderful years. Together, they raised a blended family filled with love and laughter. He was the proud father of four children: the late Jennifer Garrus (1973–2018), James Taylor Garrus III, Stefanie Sanderson, and Jennifer Boyd. He was also a cherished grandfather to seven grandchildren: Sofia and Stanley Sanderson, Brendan and Keira Ellison, Hayden and Ashlyn Garrus, and Bowie Boyd-Zebley.
Outside of work, James lived life to the fullest. He loved boating, trap shooting, and was a passionate gun enthusiast. A fan of west coast swing music and dancing, he rarely missed a chance to twirl his wife or tap his feet to a band rhythm. He and Sandra traveled extensively and enjoyed countless cruises together, creating memories that will live on in the hearts of those who knew him.
James will be remembered for his steadfast loyalty, deep love for his family, and his ability to find joy in the simple pleasures of life. He was a man of strength, humor, and unwavering devotion.
He will be deeply missed by all who had the honor of knowing him.
Rest in peace, James. Your life was well lived, and your legacy endures.
