Dr. John Howard Reed, age 85, passed from this life to the next, January 4, 2020 at his home of 30 years in Westminster, Colorado. Howard was born July 14, 1934 in Bloomfield, Missouri. Howard moved to Sikeston when he was six years old and later graduated from Sikeston High School; where he excelled on the football field gaining recognition as High School All-American Wide Receiver. His love for the football field continued into his college years while attending Southeast Missouri State University. He held the title of Wide Receiver All-State for 2 years. There are players on the fields today still trying to beat Howard's football records.
Dr. Reed went on to receive: a Bachelor's of Science Degree in History, a Master's Degree in History, a Specialist Degree in Education, and ultimately a Doctor of Philosophy of Education. He had a gift for teaching; teaching his students, teaching graduates of basic training while in the Army, teaching his children, and later even teaching his grandchildren. He became Superintendent of K-12, a supervisor of student teachers, and was instrumental in developing and also taught at the Missouri Officers Candidate School for the Missouri National Guard. Howard was also a teacher at his alma mater, Southeast Missouri State University and he was involved in their Athletic Program. He moved to Colorado in 1990 to become the Principle of Belleview Christian Schools and served as a Minster of the Pillar of Fire Church. Howard spent 38 years in the Missouri Army National Guard and Army Reserve where he proudly retired as a Lieutenant Colonel.
Howard held close in his heart: faith and devotion to God, the love of his country, his beloved family, and education. Howard is survived by his wife, Weymuth (Heuiser) Reed; daughter Catherine “Cathy” Zwink; and son David Reed; grandson Samuel Zwink, grandson Christopher Zwink, granddaughter Ashley Zwink, granddaughter Johanna Lavender and granddaughter Hallee Lavender. He will be deeply missed and forever treasured by his family and close friends.
A graveside service for Howard was held January 10, 2020 at the Belleview Cemetery, 3455 W 83rd Ave in Westminster, Colorado. A memorial service will occur Saturday, January 18, 2020 at 1:30 PM in New Jerusalem House Church, Westminster, Colorado.
