Mamie Celeste (née O’Kelly) Davis passed away in the arms of her loving family on July 27, 2025. Born January 13, 1942, to Thomas and Celeste O’Kelly, Mimi spent her formative years in Mason, TN and Lubbock, TX. She remained a consummate Southern belle the rest of her life, frequenting the beauty shop for manicures and touch ups to her signature red hair.
A great admirer of Eleanor Roosevelt, one of Mimi’s favorite quotes of hers was, “A woman is like a tea bag - you can't tell how strong she is until you put her in hot water.” Mimi proved her mettle after her high school sweetheart and spouse of 50 years, Preston Davis, preceded her in death in 2011. Armed with Diet Coke and eternal optimism, Mimi soldiered on, traveling the world into her eighties, devotedly volunteering, and building friendships wherever she landed, greeting everyone with a smile, red lipstick, and witty rejoinders.
Mimi and Preston raised their children in South Boulder and passed on to them an intense love for family, friends, and music that carries forward to this day. Passionate about community service, Mimi generously served through the years with organizations like Boulder Food Share, Meals on Wheels, Children’s Hospital Colorado, Collin County Assistance League, McFarlin Food Pantry, and driving cancer patients to appointments through the American Cancer Society. She was a large supporter of the St Phillips Clothing Closet in Uvalde, TX, run by her dearest friend and maid of honor, Beverly.
She is survived by her son Kevin and wife Vici Davis of Thornton, CO, and their children, Melody Skoglund, Merideth Pryor, Madison Davis and Matthew Davis, along with her daughter Amy and husband Jeff Frederick of Norman, OK and their children, Sarah Ederer, Mackenzie Frederick and Grace Harris. Great-grandchildren include Henry, Anna, and Greta Skoglund, Emmadell and Callahan Ederer, and Lucy and Jack Harris. She is also survived by her brother Tom and wife Annie of Dallas, TX.
A champion of her family, Mimi frequently told her fourteen grandchildren and great-grandchildren she was “proud of the people they are becoming.”
A memorial service will be at Planet Bluegrass in Lyons, CO on Tuesday, August 12 at 10:30 a.m. Taking place near the river, the family asks attendees to wear bright colors in celebration and bring wading shoes should attendees wish to participate in a flower release in the shallows.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations are directed to Children’s Hospital Colorado Research division, Oklahoma Children’s Hospital Cardiology, or St. Phillip’s Episcopal Church Clothing Closet (Uvalde, TX).
