Sandra Mae Warner, 88 of Thornton, Colorado entered into God’s loving hands on December 28th, 2023. She was surrounded and supported by her loving family and caregivers during the last days of her life.
Sandy was born on October 9th 1935 to Louise and Clyde Lucas in Muscatine, Iowa. She was the youngest of 10 children, all have preceded her in death. Even though her family endured the hardships of the times, Sandy often shared stories of how the family gathered together. No one was ever alone and no one ever went hungry. These experiences build the foundation of Sandy’s life of service and caring for others.
After graduating from Muscatine High School, Sandy married the boy next door, David M. Warner on October 3, 1953. Sandy was a devoted wife and a mother of 4 daughters. In addition to her own family, Sandy faithfully supported her older siblings.
Sandy was a skilled organizer and had the ability to work with people. Over a period of 14 years, while raising her girls in Iowa, she served in many positions with the local Girl Scouts. She was a troop leader, neighborhood chairman and the service unit director for Muscatine. In appreciation of her years of service, she was awarded the “Thanks Badge”, the highest adult Girl Scout honor, by the River Bend Girl Scout Council.
In 1972, Dave and Sandy relocated their family to Thornton, Colorado in search of work. Sandy was still located close to several of her siblings who had also migrated from Iowa to Colorado. In 1974, she reentered the workforce. She worked for Woodglen Elementary, first as a lunchroom aid and then as a paraprofessional. She later took a position at Thornton High School and worked her way up to becoming the Media Specialist for the high school library. Sandy was so well liked and respected by all of the staff that when she retired in 1998, she was appointed as an honorary faculty member. On behalf of the faculty, she read the names of the graduates at commencement that year.
When her husband Dave passed unexpectedly in 2002, Sandy pushed forward with her own life and was hired as a Library Assistant with the Adams County Library branch in Thornton. She continued working with the library through the transition to “Anythink Libraries” and worked at the Wright Farm branch until 2011.
Sandy had joined Good Shepherd United Methodist Church in Thornton shortly before Dave had passed. It was no surprise that she took on the role of a Sunday School teacher for grade school age children. She participated in the United Methodist Women group and was voted in as president. She served as president for 2 years and then served as the vice president for another two. As the focus of the group changed, she left UMW and started her own social/service group called Christian Friends. The group met monthly and completed many community outreach projects as well as built a strong fellowship of friends. After 12 years, this group still meets monthly and is a testament to her ability to make a difference in the lives of others.
In the past few years of her life, Sandy was always looking for ways to serve others. She started her own “Soup Mission”. Each week she made a big pot of soup, divided it up, and took it to friends, family and neighbors who were in need of a cheery smile inside and out. When she was no longer able to drive, she participated in missions through the church through donations and her time. She assisted her daughter Kathy in creating numerous church outreach giveaways and most recently, helped prepare craft items for the Family Craft Workshop on December 8th. She truly served God well throughout her lifetime.
Sandy is survived by her daughters and their spouses; Linda and Dan Bartlett, Kathy and Bob Lamerand, Judy and Tim Dailey and Cindy and Chris Stocker. She loved and supported her grandchildren and their spouses; Jay and Maricella, Brandon and Karen, Holly and Sean, Jennifer, Tim, Mitch, Deanna and Alex, William and Bonnie, Jaime and Greg. She adored her great grandchildren; Jackson, Brinley, Grayson, Owen, Ellijah, James and Izabella.
