Catherine Louise Lien

Her family moved to Roseburg, OR in 1962. Cathy graduated from Roseburg High School in 1978, and began attending Willamette University. She then transferred to Oregon Health Sciences University (OHSU) when she found her calling in Nursing and graduated in 1984. While working at Doernbecher’s Children Hospital, she began graduate school. Cathy finished her Master’s degree in Nursing and received her Pediatric Nurse Practitioner’s certificate in 1993 from OHSU.

On June 16, 1990, she married Robert (Bob) Lien at St. Elizabeth of Hungary Catholic Church in Portland, OR. Cathy and Bob moved to Tigard, OR in 1992 where she lived for the rest of her life. Then the lights of her life, her sons Erik and Daniel Lien, were born April 6, 1994. The following years were surrounded with family life, and assorted road trips, such as to Disneyland. As the boys got older, life revolved around the boys’ activities in school and athletics, which became a big part of her social circle. One highlight (for Bob) was a road trip in 2004 to upstate New York, where Bob grew up. Cathy loved her yearly trips with her family to Florence, OR, where her parent’s had been vacationing since the 1970’s.

As a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner, she initially worked for Kaiser, then moved to Westside Pediatrics. In 2008, she moved to Integrative Pediatrics, which later became Northwest Pediatrics Integrative Medicine.

As empty nesters, Cathy and Bob started a new yearly tradition of going to Palm Springs in October 2013. This year was particularly a highlight for trips. Cathy and Bob, along with her sons (and daughter in law, Charlotte Soderberg) took a trip to Maui in March. In June, Cathy and Bob flew abroad, for the first time, to France. Little did we know, these would be her last hurrahs.

On the morning of October 23, Cathy had generalized flu-like symptoms which continued during the day. She went to sleep that night and passed during the night. Preliminary cause is described as a Pulmonary Process. Her recent COVID infection could play a role, but further testing is being done.

Cathy is survived by her husband Bob, of Tigard, OR as well as her sons Erik Lien, of Beaverton, OR and Daniel Lien (Charlotte Soderberg) of Bend, OR. She is predeceased by her parents, William and Carol Rinio. She is also survived by her siblings, Kristy Rice (Randy) of Roseburg, OR, Jennifer Rinio of Oracle, AZ and Thomas Rinio, of Portland, OR, and several beloved nieces and nephews.

To those of us that knew her, there could not have been a kinder soul on the planet. She probably apologized to St. Peter for arriving in Heaven too soon. Cathy is truly an angel and will be missed by her patients, her friends and especially her family.
