Florence Hoover Marqueling

Florence Belle Hoover Marqueling died peacefully in her Tigard, Oregon home November 3, 2019 at age of 93. Florence was born on March 1, 1926 in Tacoma, Washington to Janet Stranack Hoover and Reynolds K. Hoover. She enjoyed a rich and full childhood in Longview, Washington with her older brother, Kay, and younger sister, Nancy.

Florence graduated from RA Long High School where she was honored by the faculty as “Most Capable” during her Senior year. She believed this award defined her life. After transferring from University of Washington, Florence completed her Bachelor of Science degree in 1948 from University of Oregon Medical School, Department of Nursing. She was selected for Alpha Tau Delta, a national nursing scholastic honorary of university women and was described in her yearbook as “petite and full of sparkle”. Upon graduation, Florence worked as a surgical nurse at both Cowlitz General Hospital and St. Vincent Hospital.

Florence married H. Edward Marqueling on August 6, 1949 at Longview Community Church and together they raised their family in Portland, Oregon. She loved being a mother and claimed her children were her greatest achievement and legacy. Florence and Ed moved to Pleasanton, California in 1979 where she lived and thrived for 36 years before relocating back to Oregon in 2016.

As a member of Pleasanton Community Church, Florence served as Deacon and was actively involved in the Choir and Ladies’ Bible study. In Tigard she joined Calvin Presbyterian Church. Florence was a 55-year member of P.E.O. in Chapter N in Oregon and Chapter BG in California, serving all the offices.

Florence was an avid golfer, walking the course and socializing with her foursome. She was a longtime member of both Pleasanton Fairways and Los Positas where she made a hole in one in 2008. The highlight of her year was competing in the Annual Hoover Family golf tournament in Neskowin.

Florence was a master seamstress, handcrafting quilts for each new baby. She loved to entertain and perfected the art of letter writing.

Florence is survived by her daughters, Nancy Schmidt (Mark), Mary Ann Anderson (Steve) and son, Jim, as well as 6 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren, sister, Nancy Quickstad of Redmond, Washington and many beloved nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ed, her parents, Janet and Reynolds Hoover and brother, R. Kay Hoover.

Florence will be remembered for her strong faith in God, integrity of character, generous and caring nature, love of family and zest for life.

A memorial service is planned for December 27, 2019 at 1:30 pm at Calvin Presbyterian Church, 10445 SW Canterbury Lane, Tigard, OR. A private interment will be held at Willamette National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to OHSU School of Nursing or Calvin Presbyterian Church.
