Jean Beatrice Dotson of Cockeysville, Maryland, passed away on July 29, 2024. She was the devoted wife of the late Charles Edward Dotson (Ed) for 25 years, and the cherished mother of the late Thomas Wilfred.
Born on May 2nd, 1927, in Jersey City, New Jersey, Jean was the adored daughter of the late Louis Mehl, a postal carrier, and the late Anna Mauer Mehl, a homemaker. Jean was a brilliant student who graduated valedictorian of her high school class. She then went on to attend the University of Florida (Go Gators!) where she earned a degree in nursing. It was while living in Florida that Jean adopted Tom, who was 2 ½ years old. She next moved, along with Tom and a cat, to Maryland where she attended the University of Maryland and graduated with a Masters in Psychiatric Nursing. She was employed for many years at Johns Hopkins Hospital until she developed macular degeneration, and no longer able to see, had no choice but to retire.
Jean then met Ed, an accountant. They married and shared glorious adventures, traveling together all over the world to such places as the Holy Land (a particular favorite!), throughout Europe, and the Virgin Islands. Eventually Ed developed MS and passed in 2001.
Jean was a very kind and generous soul whose faith never waned, nor her ability to love and trust God. Her desire to serve Him inspired her to volunteer at church, first at Faith Lutheran in Cockeysville, and then The Church of the Nativity and Holy Comforter in Baltimore. She loved participating in Bible studies, especially at St. John’s Lutheran Church of Sweet Air. Throughout her career as a nurse, and later in retirement, she continued to mentor, help, encourage and pray with those struggling with their mental health, physical health or spiritual issues.
