Mr. Mier, born in Passaic, New Jersey was raised in East Rutherford, NJ. Having studied the violin and participating as a soloist and in orchestras in his youth, in 1940 he was selected for the New Jersey All-State High School orchestra. Serving in the US Army from March 1943 until March 1946, he started out as a combat medic and ended as a scout for Company L, 415th, Infantry Regiment, 104th Timberwolf Division. With combat experienced in France, Belgium, and Holland, among his awards are the Bronze Star Medal and the combat Infantryman Badge.
Mier began is 47-year business career with the Flintkote Company in 1941 as a timekeeper, ending in 1988 as Assistant Vice President-Finance. During that period, he served in accounting and treasury offices as plant and division controllers. He described his career as a financial troubleshooter, working in 11 plant and office locations in New Jersey, Illinois, New York, Rhode Island, Connecticut, and Maryland. He participated in planning, construction, and installation of new plant facilities in Illinois, Indiana, California, and Washington. After retiring in 1988, he initiated his own business of Mier Opinions acting as a tax consultant for another 17 years for the survivor of 3 company mergers now known as LaFarge.
Mier’s education consisted of evening classes at Rutgers, Fairleigh Dickinson, Louisiana State, and Northwestern Universities in advanced accounting and business courses. In military service he was afforded opportunity of taking accelerated engineering courses at Rutgers University.
Civically, Mier served as President on Chicago Heights Library Board of Trustees, Bloom Township High School Board of Education, and Bloom Township Community College Board of Education. He had also chaired the Finance of Salary Committees of those organizations. He was heavily involved in the planning, construction, and development of the local community college and also a second area high school. In 1950-51, he chaired the Evansville, Indiana chapter of the National Association of Cost Accountants. In his final years as a resident of Mercy Ridge Retirement Center, he served as a member of the Scholarship and Library Committees, chaired its Finance Committee and was the Administrative Coordinator of the weekly Thursday morning Protestant Church services. He was President of the Mercy Ridge Residents Council in 2008 and 2009. He also served as Chairman of the National Cooperative Retirement Services of American Resident Advisory Council in Years 2009 through 2011.
Mier was a member and elder of Towson Presbyterian church. Throughout his lifetime actively he engaged in a variety of church responsibilities, chairing and presiding over various finance and administrative committees. He was a former Stephen Minister, Stephen Leader, and advisor to senior high youth.
Mr. Mier is the beloved husband of the late Beverly Ruth Mier (nee Smith); loving father of John K. Mier, Jr., Rev. Dr. Donald Mier, Beverly Jean Gill and Paul Mier; dear brother of Lois Elizabeth Boyd and the late Fred Horace Mier. Also lovingly survived by 8 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
A Celebration of Jack's life will be held in Mercy Ridge Retirement Community, 2525 Pot Spring Road, Timonium, MD 21093 on Saturday, November 17 at 11am.
