

Alan D. Kirby of Toms River died peacefully at home surrounded by family on November 11 at the age of 83. Born November 8, 1931 to Harry and Marie Kirby in Orange NJ, he attended local schools, graduating from Clifford J. Scott High School, University of Connecticut and Rutgers Law School. During his legal career he served as a NJ Deputy Attorney General, a Deputy Public Defender and maintained a private law practice in Toms River. He was admitted to both the New Jersey and Colorado Bars, practicing for a time in Aspen, CO. Mr. Kirby was a Korean War veteran and served in the US Navy from 1951-53, achieving the rank of Third Class Petty Officer specializing in Aviation Electronics.
Mr. Kirby was predeceased by his loving wife of 56 years, Annette (Ann) Kirby in 2012. He leaves behind a devoted family who will truly miss him: his son Alan Jr. & his wife, Patricia of Williams Township, PA; his daughter, Susan & her husband, David Friedman of Bridgewater, NJ; and his daughter, Diane & her husband, Al Jacoutot of London, England; and four grandchildren, Jonathan and Rachel Friedman and Michael and Matthew Jacoutot.
His friends and family will remember his generous spirit and wry sense of humor. Although he was dealt a number of physical obstacles late in life, Mr. Kirby always met each challenge head on, and lived his life to the fullest.
Funeral arrangements will be handled by Anderson & Campbell Funeral Home in Toms River. A separate burial ceremony is planned for December 22, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at Brigadier General William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Wrightstown, NJ. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the American Parkinson Disease Association at www.apdaparkinson.org.
