

Edward Joseph Jones, Jr., 98 of Whiting, NJ, passed away on May 29th, 2023. Born and raised in North Arlington, NJ, he graduated from North Arlington High School in 1942. After graduation, he heeded the country's call to Arms and joined the US Navy Armed Guard. While in convoy off North Africa, his ship the SS James R. Lowell was hit by 3 torpedoes and broke apart. He and some of his shipmates were rescued, covered with heavy oil. They used hot water from British locomotives to remove the oil. He was then assigned to the LST 491, and the LST 264. These ships participated in the Anzio, and Normandy landings. After the war, he met his true love, Joan Kightlinger, and married in 1950. Edward worked for the A&P for almost 40 years .They had homes in Packanack Lake, East Hanover., Island Heights, and Crisfield, MD. After Joan's passing in 1998, Ed moved to Whiting and dated Helen Weiss until her passing. He was predeceased by his wife Joan and his granddaughter Erin. Edward is survived by his 3 sons: Edward, III (Laura); Dennis (Dawn); and Kenneth (Sherlene). He was the proud grandfather of 7 grandchildren, and great grandfather of 7 great-grandchildren. A viewing for Ed will be Monday, June 5th, at Anderson & Campbell located at 703 Main St. in Toms River from 2pm to 4pm and 7pm to 9 pm. A committal service and military honors will be on Tuesday at 11am at Brig. Gen. William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Wrightstown.
