With heavy hearts we announce the passing of Florian Gundy. On Monday, February 26, 2024, Florian peacefully passed away with his loved ones at his side after a heroic battle of several lengthy illnesses. Born on April 20, 1940, in Newark, NJ, he was a long time East Hanover, NJ resident. He later retired in Manchester, NJ with his wife Elaine.
After graduating from Irvington Technical High School in 1958, he dedicated his life to his wife, children and grandchildren. Sheet metal work was his glory. Professionally, he worked as an HVAC mechanical contractor and formed a business, Hanover Mechanical Inc., with his son Gregory in 1987. Florian lived large and worked even harder. He was a huge role model and teacher with a great work ethic. He would employ anyone and everyone who ever needed a job and taught them his trade with such great passion. Florian retired from Hanover Mechanical in 2012 and dedicated his last 9 years lovingly taking care of his devoted wife, Elaine.
Florian was a gentle, generous and charitable man who had the gift of song, storytelling and an enormous sense of humor and wit. In 1957, he joined a Quartet Group called “The Imperials”. His love of music and stories continued with self-authored songs and ditties like “Lori” and “I Stand Before You”. He had an endless list of life-long friendships; just ask the “Fourth Street Gang” and his East Hanover buddies of which he loved to dine out, play cards, golf, and bowl. His love of music, movies and Fox News was insatiable. Florian will be lovingly cherished and greatly missed in our hearts.
Florian was preceded in death by his loving wife Elaine Elizabeth Gundy of almost 63 years; his parents, Lucille and Joseph Gundy; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Florence and Francis Farrand; and sister, Dolores Caponetto. He is survived by his brother, Joseph Gundy and sister, Florine Gundy, and his sister-in-law, Barbara Umstot; his cherished children, Lori, Gregory (Rinee), Debbie (Jamie); his 11 doting grandchildren, Kaitlyn (Alastar), Andrew (Shanna), Gregory (Shannon), Brett, Matthew (Stephanie), Lexi, Jackie; his great grandchildren, Jameson and Emmett, and 1 boy on the way to continue his amazing Gundy legacy. Also survived by countless nieces, nephews and close friends all of whom held a very special place in his heart.
We will be celebrating Florian’s life on Saturday, March 9, 2024, starting at 9am with a funeral service at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, 685 Hooper Avenue, Toms River, NJ 08753 – 732-349-0018 and then a celebration of life luncheon immediately following at Buona Sera Restaurant, 50 Maple Avenue, Red Bank, NJ 07701 – 732-530-5858. In lieu of flowers, please make donations in his memory to The MS Society, www.nationalmssociety.org, to continue Florian’s legacy of helping family and friends. May Florian’s memory be a beautiful blessing always.
