
James Bernard McKinney, Jr. MBA J.D., aged 75, of Toms River, New Jersey, passed away on Monday May 11, 2026. Born in Hackensack, he lived in Tenafly, NJ before moving to Lavallette, NJ and finally Toms River, NJ. He attended Fordham Preparatory School where he won the Manhattan Science Foundation award in Physics. He graduated from Dartmouth University with an undergraduate degree in Physics, and Master’s Degrees in both Physics and Business Administration – completed in 5 years on ROTC. Dr. McKinney was a Lieutenant in Admiral Rickover’s Submarine Navy where he was decorated with a National Defense Service Medal and The Navy Expeditionary Medal. Following his service in the Navy, he completed his law degree at Fordham, had a successful private practice in Manhattan, was an Assistant District Attorney for New York, a Deputy Attorney General for New Jersey and a Principal Examiner for FINRA, from which he retired.
“The Captain” enjoyed Skiing, Sailing and loved live music and dancing.
Surviving are his partner of more than 20 years Chris Kaiser; his brother Timothy Brian McKinney Ph.D., M.D (Amy McKinney); sons Brian James McKinney, MBA (Caitlin McKinney) and Michael John McKinney; grandsons John Jameson McKinney and Kieran Michael McKinney as well his nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitation will be held at Anderson and Campbell Funeral Home, 703 Main St., Toms River NJ on Thursday, May 28, 2026 from 4-8pm. On Friday, May 29, 2026, a Funeral Mass will be held at St. Joseph’s Church, 685 Hooper Ave., Toms River at 10am with a ceremony and interment to follow at Brigadier General William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Wrightstown, NJ at 1pm.
