Joan Kuntz (nee Fitzgerald), 83, of Manchester, NJ passed away Monday, April 6, 2020. Born on Easter Sunday March 28, 1937 to Mary and John Fitzgerald, Joan grew up in Jersey City, NJ. A friend to all, Joan was always ready to chat and enjoyed learning about the people around her. It was not uncommon for her to bring a box of pastries or doughnuts with her on her weekly trip to the hairdresser or to others in the community. Joan was always willing to do a favor for a neighbor from picking up a paper while she was out to driving them to an appointment. Her job as a switchboard operator suited her outgoing personality. “Joanie”, as she was endearingly known to many, loved her job as the switchboard operator at the Jamesway headquarters in Secaucus, NJ and later at a Nextel call center in Rutherford, NJ. Managing the phones and a busy front desk came naturally to her. As “Nanny”, Joan relished the role of grandmother and great-grandmother. She is remembered with love by her daughter Victoria (and Robert) Shanahan, grandchildren Jennifer (and Mike) Phelan, Megan Shanahan, and Michael Shanahan, and great-grandchildren Calvin and Jesse Phelan.
