Born in Princeton, he grew up in Hightstown.
He lived in East Brunswick and Keansburg before settling in Manchester in 2011.
Mr. Hewins was a manager in retail sales throughout his career, and was most recently employed by Nu-Way, Kearney, until becoming disabled in 2009.
He served in the US Army during the Viet Nam War.
He was predeceased by his parents, Charles and Jeanette Hewins, and by his brother Charlie.
He is survived by his children, Mitana Torres and her husband William of Union Beach, Liza Hewins and fianc, Pedro of Manchester, and Richard Hewins and his wife Lisa of Freehold; six grandchildren, and his siblings, David, Carol, Bonnie, Paul, Mark, and Michael.
Cremation was private and entrusted to Horizon Funeral and Cremation Services, 1329 Route 37 West, Toms River.
Interment of cremains with Military Honors will take place at 1:00pm on Monday, September 26, 2016 at the Brigadier General William C. Doyle Veteran's Memorial Cemetery, Arneytown.
