Robert Russell Matthews, age 76, of Toms River, formerly of Nutley, passed away Sunday, Aug. 29th at Ocean Medical Center, Brick, NJ. Born February 11th, 1945 he is predeceased by his parents Francis and Florence Matthews, and was the youngest of 5 children: Dorothy, Francis, Margaret and John. He is survived by his wife Suellen (Whitney) Matthews, his daughters Margaret, Kathleen and Kelly, and son Corey.
He graduated from Nutley High School in 1963, went on to attend Park College in Missouri, and then continued his education at Bloomfield College in NJ. After college he served his country in the U.S. Army and received an honorable discharge in June 1968. He built a career in IT, beginning at the Shulton Company in Clifton, NJ.
While working at Shulton, he met his would be wife Suellen in 1975. They married in 1985 and settled Toms River in 1992.
He took pleasure in freshwater fishing and photography and was a skilled and self-taught carpenter and mechanic.
As a long time Basset Hound owner and lover, he most recently enjoyed spending time with his Clover and Ivy while watching Yankee games.
A memorial gathering will be held Saturday, Sept. 4th from 3 – 5 & 7 - 8 PM at the Anderson & Campbell Funeral Home, 703 Main St. Toms River, NJ.
