Wilfred “Ted” Gerlach, age 83, passed away peacefully on May 5, 2025 at Community Medical Hospital in Toms River, New Jersey, following a sudden illness. A man of unmistakable character, sharp wit, and deep passions, Ted leaves behind a life richly lived and fondly remembered.
Born in 1942, Ted spent his childhood in Roselle, exploring the outdoors — fishing local streams, hunting with his father, and enjoying long summer days at the beach in Lavallette, where his lifelong love of the sun, sand, and surf first took root. In later years, he enjoyed spending his days sitting on the front porch of the Ortley Beach House to watch the passing cars and catch some rays.
Ted served his country with honor during the Vietnam War as a proud member of the United States Armed Forces. Stationed in Korea, Ted spent his days in the Maintenance Shop, servicing military vehicles. That sense of discipline and dedication followed him through every chapter of his life — whether on the field, under the hood, or by the side of those he loved.
Ted was a lifelong enthusiast of classic cars. His garage was more than a collection — it was a testament to craftsmanship, patience, and joy. Many weekends were spent polishing chrome, swapping stories, and taking long drives in cars that turned heads and sparked conversations.
Pouring his heart into coaching and reffing youth soccer, Ted mentored countless kids over the years with equal parts tough love and encouragement. His players remember him not just for the wins, but for the life lessons he shared along the way. Ted’s legacy lives on not only through his family and the lives he touched, but also in the annual Branchburg Travel Soccer Labor Day Tournament at White Oak Park, which he proudly co-founded and helped grow into a beloved community tradition.
Ted was preceded in death by his parents, Wilfred T. Sr. and Thelma Gerlach who instilled in him a love for family and a deep appreciation for life’s simple pleasures.
Ted is survived by his son Wilfred T. Gerlach III and his wife Bonnie, his daughter Alexandra O'Pecko and her husband Joe, and five beloved grandchildren, Theodore, Sean, Ryan, Ronald, and Anibel, who brought him endless pride and laughter. He also leaves behind his younger siblings Anita and William, his ex-wife JoAnna, his dedicated partner Sharon and loving companion Maria who brought joy and adventure to his later years. They remained faithfully by his side throughout his illness, offering comfort and care during his final days.
Ted’s life was full — of stories, of laughter, of engine roars and cheers from the sideline. He will be remembered for his charisma, sharp wit and his unmistakable presence.
A memorial service with military honors will be held at Horizon Funeral & Cremation Services on Monday, May 12, 2025 at 3 pm ET, where family and friends are invited to share memories and celebrate Ted’s remarkable life. The ceremony will include a flag presentation and a salute in recognition of his service to the nation.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to organizations that reflect his passions, including Wounded Warrior Project in support of veterans, St. Jude Children's Hospital or Susan B. Komen in support of breast cancer research.
