November 30, 1934 – November 21, 2024
Yvonne Nelson Summerill, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully at the age of 89 in her home. Born on November 30, 1934, in Westfield, NJ, Yvonne spent her childhood summers in Island Heights, NJ, where she cultivated a deep love for the water. It was there that she met the love of her life, Joseph J. Summerill III, while sailing on Barnegat Bay. Their bond, forged on the waves, became the foundation of a marriage filled with love, adventure, and a strong sense of family.
Yvonne devoted her life to raising her five children, a role she embraced with love and dedication. Her family brought her the greatest joy, but she also pursued her many passions with enthusiasm. A gifted pianist, Yvonne delighted in leading family sing-alongs around the piano, creating cherished memories for all who gathered. She was an avid sailor, a skilled tennis player, and a bridge enthusiast who treasured the intellectual challenge of Friday afternoon bridge games at the Toms River Yacht Club, where she was the longest living member.
Yvonne is survived by her twin sister, Sandra Nelson; her four children: Scott, Kristine, Susan, and Joe; five adoring grandchildren: Lessley, Sarah, Allison, Nick, and Jake; and her precious great-granddaughter, Savannah. She is preceded by her much beloved daughter Carolyn (1960 - 2017).
A celebration of Yvonne’s life will be held at the Island Heights United Methodist Church on December 21, 2024 at 2 pm. Friends and family are invited to share stories, honor her memory, and fill the air with the sound of music — just as she would have wanted.
