Moulder, Alan

Alan Moulder, 87, of Toronto, ON, died March 11, 2024 in his home peacefully surrounded by family and close friends. To know Alan was to know a piece of Toronto’s history. He was born 27 November 1936 at East York General Hospital. His mother, Louise Moulder, was an orphan from the United Kingdom who was brought to Canada as an indentured servant in 1913. Consequently, Alan’s mother was forced to abandon him at birth to the Children's Aid Society of Toronto where he stayed until he was 15 years old. Despite his challenging beginning, Alan’s spirit was a vibrant light in a sometimes dark world. In his teenage years, he worked as a waiter at the Toronto Hunt Club and the Arcadian Court, Simpson Tower. In young adulthood, he started a career with the Toronto Police Department that lasted 5 years. Alan went to work for Consumers' Gas as a meter reader. He loved the everyday experience of walking through different areas and buildings in the city. At retirement, his knowledge of Toronto's geographic and historic development between 1945 and today was profound. A true connoisseur of life, Alan held an unparalleled passion for supporting people in sobriety. He was one of the founding members of the gay fellowship of Alcoholic Anonymous in Toronto. It was a joy to witness him greet and welcome people into the meeting rooms. His dedication was a lesson in acceptance and compassion. He encouraged us all to be responsible and lived by this statement; "I am responsible. When anyone, anywhere, reaches out for help, I want the hand of A.A. always to be there. And for that: I am responsible." The responsibility statement was written for the 1965 International Convention in Toronto, and it remains a core principle of AA service today. As we honor Alan Moulder’s memory, let us pledge to live our lives with the same fervor and love that he did. Let us keep his spirit alive by embodying these same principles and sparkle in life.
