He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather and will be deeply missed by his wife of 59 years, Elizabeth (Selby), his children; Mary (Thomas Cable), Lisa (John Leon), Joan (Peter Copp), Joseph (Lisa Watson), Catherine (Laura Hall), Lynette (Christopher Everest), Michael (Stephanie van Es), and Alan (Maev Beaty); his grandchildren: Jonathan, Sarah, Anna, Thomas, Mark (Jaime Stich), Michael, Matthew, Vanessa, Kaitlin, Alyssa, Ryan, Brittany, Alex, Stephanie, Charlotte, Madison, Danielle, Lauren, Aidan, Jack and Esmé; his great granddaughter Cameron; his sister Marjorie Gorelle, brother Rob, sister-in-laws Julie and Erika, and brother in law Victor Kirby. Alan is pre-deceased by parents Francis and Mary, sister Barb (Kirby), brother John, and brother-in-law Ray Gorelle.
Alan grew up in the Beach, graduated from St. Mike’s High School, and was an accomplished athlete whose lifelong commitment to health and fitness assisted him in his final journey. Al’s passion for life and learning brought him new joy, even in his last months.
Alan spent his entire career as a professional accountant with Deloitte & Touche and its predecessors: becoming a Chartered Accountant in 1954, a partner in 1963, chairman from 1986-1990, and retiring from active practice in 1995. Most recently Alan chaired the Deloitte & Touche Retired Partners Council. His professional commitments included service on various committees of the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants, on the Ontario Securities Commission Financial Disclosure Advisory Committee, and on The Canadian Comprehensive Auditing Foundation.
In addition to his career as a professional accountant, Alan found it rewarding to share his professional talents with his community. He served as a director of Mackenzie Financial Corporation, Investors Group and Medical Facilities Corporation. As a volunteer he served on the board of the Archdiocese of Toronto’s Mary Centre, was chair of St. Michael’s Hospital, St. Michael’s Hospital Research Institute, and was the Honorary Director and founding chair of St. Michael’s Homes. He was a member of the Board of Governors of Regis College at the University of Toronto, and chair of the York Club, Toronto Lawn Tennis Club, and the Dundas Separate School Board.
In October, Regis College, the Jesuit School of Theology at the University of Toronto awarded both Alan and Elizabeth the degree of Doctor of Sacred Letters in recognition of their long years of social service.
Alan particularly cherished his associations with partners at Deloitte & Touche, the Sisters of St. Joseph, The Jesuit Fathers, the communities of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish, St. Christopher’s Parish, the Toronto Lawn Tennis Club and his many friends.
Alan’s strong sense of community, fairness, integrity, humility and service will live on in his eight children and their families’ always.
